Air Layer with plain peat moss?

I have plain peat moss and not the long fibered stuff.  Would it be okay to air layer with only peat moss?  Furthermore i'm trying to air layer a younger tree which only has green branches, would it be okay to air layer green branches?  I remember seeing a thread but cant find it with the search function.

Thanks again

Many countries and people within air layer with sphagnum moss.  I think the secret is to cut the limb, cover it with moist soil of some kind, and cover that with foil to make it think it's in the dark, and to deflect light.

Give it a try!  You got nothing to lose!

Im trying 2 air layers now with peat moss I pre-soaked. I can already see root on one of them.

To do a cut air-layering, you cut up at an angle through the stem 2/3rds of the way through the stem, prop the cut open with a toothpick so the stem won't close and reseal it's self. I usually put, 3 bamboo skewers or 2 popsicle sticks around the cut and twist tie them at both ends to the stem above and below the cut to keep it from being broken off due to bumping, or winds. Dust the cut with rooting hormone, surround it with moist moss, then with Saran wrap. twist tied at both ends. keep the soil lightly moist to encourage faster rooting at the cut site..

Slingha,
if you put a little dish detergent/dish soap like Dawn, in the water before you add the peatmoss it will almost instantly wet the moss, no soaking over night needed that way. Detergent will not harm your plants. Infact it's good for them.

That's a much deeper cut than I've read before. Most who air-layer figs cut away a band of bark down to the cambium layer - some not even that much. If you cut through the stem 2/3 of the way, you are damaging more than half of the water conducting tissues. Would that not make the upper segments of the branch wilt too much?

I want to try airlayering with coco coir, since it wets and re-wets much easier!

thank you everyone for your input.  I made the unfortunate mistake of leaving my 3 year old alone with the fig tree in the middle of air layering.  After removing the bark and going upstairs to get string my little one happened to remove about 3 inch worth of bark on a not too large of a branch.  I cant do an air layer on any other branch as this is a young tree.  I've finished the process and am now hoping for a miracle lol  oh well next year

Anything if kept moist in a airlayer container will work .
One does not even have to cut the bark either.  ; )

too late dieseler, I'm just hoping the 4 inch worth of removed bark isnt too detrimental.

4 inches sounds like a lot , I would think it may weaken the entire branch you may want to try to support the branch somehow just in case. when I do it I cut about an inch of bark away, but ya never know in the world of figs, good luck with it and keep posting on it's progress.

It's not to late for the right answer. Gina and Martin are right on. On your next air layer you know.

very true lukeott, in the past i have had success with air layering a brown turkey.

Rookie -- i have tried to add support by tying string around the air layered branch and the stump.

Hello everyone, i have yet to see roots in my air layer and its been exactly 4 weeks.  The branch is growing and developed new leaves since July 29th.  I'm itching to just remove the plastic and inspect but i dont want to kill the air layer.  The tree is a desert king and how much longer do u think i should wait.  Thanks Again

If you used clear plastic on the air layer you'll see roots

can you air layer on the greenwood?

Pretty sure you can. Although if you go to treesofjoy and search greenwood cuttings it may be a better way to go.

greetings all

I was just looking at other links out there on the web regarding step-by-step procedues for air-layering figs. This is the URL to the info, which includes several good procedural photos, container, root ball, etc.

I'm currently airlayering an Ischia Black from UCD in two spots.  One with soil and perlite and one with only moss.  I see roots in the moss and none in the soil mix yet.

thank you everyone for their response

Slingha, i have used clear plastic but im too impatient and have to see if their are small roots that have hit the surface of the plastic lol

Maro2bear thanks 4 your link and it suggests that it can take about 6-8 weeks so i guess i'm gonna have to wait until the end of sept.  Will my air layer survive because over here in Vancouver the plants start to go dormat at the beginning of October.
