Air layered

Hello everybody
Is it to late to start an air layer? It would be on a green shoot
Vito

Vito I guess it depends where you're located. I'm in South Louisiana and will be starting a bunch this coming week. My trees don't go dormant until late October or later.
"gene"

Hi Gene
I'm in zone 4, I think they will be dormant by the end of October too.
Thank you.
Vito

go for it vito!

good luck, eli

Vito,

I am assuming you are in Canada.
There's still some warm weather left to try to successfully layer one.

You might have enough time to get it to root but if I may make one suggestion and that is to take the new layered plant indoor for the Winter.

I would keep it awake for the first season to let it grow more roots and strong. If you let it go dormant you may be risking killing it.

I have done this with my prized Sals Corleone when I first got it along with some more prized figs. I rather take them inside for the first Winter and sacrifice fruit for the sake of keeping them alive and strong. Will worry about fruit the following season.

Good luck

Thank you all.
Rafed, I live in the beautifull Saratoga springs N.Y. zone 4.
Vito

Vito,

I have to agree about beautifull. Been by there a few times. There's another member that lives near by you. Just can't say who without permission.

Maybe we can exchange figs for maple syrup one day?

If you had to choose between air laying now or taking a cutting in the fall which would you prefer?

Is it better to do an air layer on green/new wood or brown/old wood?

Air layer now
I like semi hard wood roots real fast
Made a mistake on my jelly I put an airlayer on the tip of the main trunk about 8" down then it decided to flush and now instead of 8" its 28" and still going

rafed - if you ever come to my area on the 401 HW 1 hr east of toronto, i will hook you up with great dark amber syrup locally made.....

Eli,

You're on!

Rafed, that is what I have done also, wintered young plants indoors for a better chance of survival. It seems to be the best way to go late in the season.

Hi, Cathy,

I have done many more cuttings than I have done air layering.   I have about a 75% success rate with cuttings.  I have only done two air layerings.  I like the air layerings because if it takes you have a little plant already started.

Did you ever get the cuttings for Longue D'Aout?

Raft, I would like to know all the fig members in my area because I will have some extra fig plants that I would be willing to share.  It would be difficult for me to ship them, as I have so many.  If you have the maple syrup, I have the plants! :)
Vito

Thanks Vito,

But I was asking you for the syrup. LOL
Since your area is well known for it.

I will ask the person that lives near by if it is ok. I have not seen this person post in a very long time.

All I can do is try.

Hi Vito,

I have not got cuttings for Longue D'Aout yet.
One of these days it will happen.
