air layered fig tree dropped all its leafs in the first week after planting

Need to know if it will survive

It might survive. After removing the air layer, I usually leave the plant in mostly shade for 10 days; then, I start inching it out into more and more sun. This is more difficult during the hottest months of the year. The best time to remove air layers in my opinion is during April/May or after the plant has gone dormant in the fall.

Also, keep in mind that the larger the volume of the pot you put the plant into, the better chances the plant has of surviving, since larger volumes of soil retain their moisture better than smaller ones.

This is what I've seen in my experience with air layering, and I've never lost one.

It depends on the reason.  Did you damage the leaves (e.g., put it in strong sunlight, or relied on a small root mass to support large leaf mass); or did you damage the roots (e.g., accidentally sheared off tender roots in the handling).  In any case, move the air layer into the shade and water well.

If you merely damaged the leaves, in a few weeks you will see new buds.

If you damaged the roots, it depends how bad.  If there was minor damage, same as above.  If there was major damage, you basically have a huge cutting.  It will try to grow new roots.  But it may take 6-8 weeks to know whether the large botched cutting will live.

So many variables. If you have a shade cloth use it and water regularly, but now that it is in ground, I wouldn't move it around anymore.
Good luck.

Thank you for replying . I didn't damage the root ball after I cut it off the mother tree it was dense root ball and planted it in 5 gallon pot and it was iindoor since .i used organic fertilizer and watered it twice in one week but the leafs started turning yellow after only 2 days and eventually dropped them all .mow I have only bold stick in the pot .

Since you didn't damage the roots, don't worry too much. I've had this happen several time and have not lost an AL yet. Just continue to keep it in the shade and watered well. If you have terminal buds on the AL it will recover even more quickly.

Thank you I will .

I never fertilize an air layer that soon. I first let it sit in potting soil and show that it's on its own for a few days.
All you can do now is water regularly (not overwater) and hope for it to push new buds.

I have red somewhere that says firtelize regularly so that's why I did and I have successfully air layered a lemon tree and did the same and it's doing very well new shoots are growing but the fig no.

I agree with Sas -- I wouldn't fertilize until after a couple weeks, after signs of good root growth.

Also, after potting I would have watered once or twice a day.  Remember, the tree is used to support from the mother.  Suddenly it is cut off.  It has to support all its leaves with roots that are bunched up in a little dry ball.  IMO, those roots need water.  And a damp medium will encourage rapid root growth.  I've never had a problem overwatering an air layer.  Assuming a decent potting medium, you shouldn't either.

That said, an air layer with no leaves will not need much water.  So you should water lightly until leaves grow.

After transplanting air layer i keep it in shade and mist the leaves with a sprayer 3 or 4 times a day for 8 -10 days, if air layer is big and the leaves start to curl i cut leaves in half

Yep. What everyone said. I cut mine & leave it in shade in same container in cool spot for as long as possible till new roots are showing all over pot. Water 💦 it too.

Thank you all for responding .i did exsacly what everyone of you said except I did fertilize it so now that it dosnt have any leafs I am not sure if it will come back I keep it indoor in shade and mist it 3-4 times a day like I did with my air layered lemon .hopefully it will shoot new growth .

One more question .should I water my lemon one 3-4 times a day as well?

I wanted to share the picture of the air layered plants ,but I do not know how I can do it here
