Air Layering advice -- should I do it and when?

Hi,

I bought this Mission fig a while ago. I don't like how tall this tree is (from the soil to the upper branches is about 4 foot tall) and I would like to grow this fig in an open-center form. I am thinking about air-layering the trunk so that I would have two shorter fig trees.

Is this a good idea? And if so, when would be a good time to start air-layering? I live in California.

I also have a Desert King that I might consider doing the same as well.

Thanks for your advice!

Yes you can do it. There is a thread now about air-layering the truck with great success. I would say start now since it is so thin it shouldn't take long to root. Leave some nodes on the bottom to grow new leaves.

with airlayer you get 1 tree out of that trunk....
with cuting you get 5-7  3 nodes cuttings...

btw i am trying to air layer a fejoa--does somone has experience with doing it with feijoa?

Hello figlicious,
Welcome to the forum community.

Yes. Air layering can be done anytime the plant is actively growing (leaves are green) and you have at least 4 weeks of growing time.

Here are two topics discussing air layering in California and air layering procedures. Good Luck.

Thank you all for the response! They are very helpful!
