air layering problem

This spring I decided to air layer a container fig which had split into 2 main branches, and didn't have any low side branches.  I have the milk jugs sitting on small clamps.  I did this with several other trees which all seem to be doing well so far. But this one has dying leaves above both air layers. On one branch all the leaves are dying, on the other branch maybe half of them are...it seems to have grown some new ones recently.  Maybe the clamps are too tight?  I can't loosen them...they are like clothespins but much stronger.  On top of this, it is now growing a ton of branches below one air layer.  If I cut off both air layers, the tree will still have 3 main branches, though it will be a little lopsided.  Both jugs have roots in them.  Should I just continue to let them root for the rest of the season, and see if they survive when I plant them?  Is there anything else I can do to help them out?  Or should I remove the jug below the ones which are all dying now,  since it turns out that I'm going to keep the branch anyway? (I originally thought it was going to be barren below the jugs and the base tree would be tossed).  Thoughts?fig 2.jpg  fig.jpg

It looks like it had a water issue or a reflected heat issue.

If this was mine I'd take off the one going to the side, cut off the two side branches as cuttings, repot it, then see how it does.  Not sure about the other upright AL though; you're right, taking that off would make it look a bit lopsided.
