Air Roots?

I wish I could take better photos, and I hope you can see these, but many of my rooted cuttings in double cups have roots coming from below, and growing up the sides of the top cup.  What are they thinking?

I'm happy to see all these roots, but wondering why they don't circle below the soil.  Growing upwards is mystifying me!

maybe it senses more moisture above then below? last yr, we had few days that was really humid and hot. i saw branches trying to put out roots.

Pete, I guess you could be right.  I'm going to pot up  some of these crazy mixed up cuttings on Monday.  We have company today and house hunting tomorrow, so they will have to wait.  I fear watering them, but maybe I could just soak the bottoms in an inch of water just to give them the idea that the water is below.

They will prune themselves in time. The great thing is that you have roots. Too many roots is a nice problem.

Suzi,
Had that same situation a few weeks ago with some cuttings in cups, and eventually the tops of those roots that extended above the rim of the cup died off. But, no harm no foul, because below in the center and bottom of the cup the roots still continue to grow.  No Worries!!

Suzi, if I were you and not potting them asap, I would add a little more of soil to cover those roots.

Unfortunately, Grasa!  Taking a break now from cooking this huge turkey and fixings.  Company will arrive soon.  On to appetizers!!  No time to mess with soil!  :-))
