Been too busy this summer to do my usual layering stint. Does anyone know if roots will continue to develop over late fall/winter period on a tree that's kept indoors during this period?

The air layers will take roots for sure, but they will take a little longer to root than in the spring. Good luck.

Very good question. I have a few potted figs I may bring in over winter to try air layers. Might let them go fully dormant then pull them in to wake up. Might help get early fruit set if it had enough chill time. Never know unless you try I guess.

Thanks guys. So sounds like it might be worth a try. But I was gonna bring 'em in before they go into dormancy.

@ Dave - So are you saying I might have a better chance of success if I allow them to go into dormancy first? That would mean losing all the main crop on one of them. I was hoping the crop might survive to the following summer and ripen, in accordance with: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/the-theory-of-the-fig-cycle-6506156, about which I'm very sceptical. I was gonna put it to the test one last time, but not holding my breath.

Are you planning on putting them under grow lights indoors?  I would not attempt to keep any sun-loving plant indoors for any extended period of time without grow lights.  If you do the grow lights, then air layers and fruit ripening should both be possible

Hmm, now there's a plan. No, I wasn't planning on any special lighting. That doesn't mean I wouldn't consider it tho., providing running costs are not prohibitive. I'm also considering a greenhouse sometime nxt year. Can these lights also be used in a greenhouse?

If I use a heated greenhouse I assume grow lights are not needed?

The contra of that is that if I used an unheated greenhouse, grow lights might come in handy. I assume they give out heat as well as light, which would mean I may not need to worry about heating, right?

Even better than a heated greenhouse, how about a solar-powered greenhse? Depending on size, heats both your greenhse and your home. And presumably enough power there for grow lights too.
