Aked fig

Finally got my Aked fig to ripen. I have not heard much about this fig so I was eager to taste it. There was a nice drop of honey blocking the eye. The flavor was very light but refreshing. My tree is still very small so I hope the sugar content will improve with age.

Nice pics and thank you for posting now I know what to expect out of my little aked plant. Its true you dont hear much about this fig I nearly tossed it out already but kept it since its got some funky leaves but only grew about 6-7 inches this season.

Bumping an old thread...

Does anyone else have any experience with this fig? I've not found much information about it other than a few pictures, and since I'm starting some cuttings, I wondered if there is any further information about how it tastes. The leaves are pretty.

Gina,

I can't say that it has ever stood out when tasted at USDA/UC Davis. I plan to spend more time on tasting and a little less on pictures when I visit later this month.

Sounds like the typical light fig  -flavor light and refreshing  and or sweet honey etc etc.
Jon take note .
Now how was that dark type in your hand and be honest .

Martin, There are some very good dark figs, but there are some green figs that I would not be without. Just can't get over that hump.

BT proves that dark isn't always good.

Hey folks - can I get an update? I have an Aked that has figs on it but I'm wondering if it deserves a bigger pot. I have limited space for 15 gallon pots so I try and use those for the very best figs. Otherwise I'll prune and keep in 7 gallon pot.
Any new info on taste and or productivity?
Anyone out there with Aked in the mid atlantic states - in zone 7?
thx

Almost two years later, no new info. That itself may speak volumes. :)

Gina,
Mine is right on schedule both in size and number of figs I'd expect. That and it has really cool looking leaves will get it into a bigger pot. Also showing very little FMV. I am excited to taste this one and if it's good I'll send cuttings to Martin.

He could probably use some good kindling for his barrel.

I'm a bit interested in its' origin.
I've thinking about this fig/name for about a month now and ever since my wife's nieces son was named Aked ( a ked ). The "A" is soft, ah ked, a ked, aked.

This name comes from what I understand was king or ruler from long ago who ruled what was then called Babylon.

More research needs to be done on the origin of the name but I am in no way connecting the fig with it. Just curious to the origin? And could it be just it?

Can someone chime in?
