Anyone growing figs in the Nashville, TN area?

Cody, welcome to the board. Hang around and I'm sure someone will pop up. I have a brother in Tullahoma who's wife is growing a couple of Celeste she got from my Dad in La. They are in ground and usually die back most years.

We have a couple of folks that live in TN here, or close by.  Hopefully they pop in and say "hey!"

Either way, welcome to the forum ;)

gene, thanks for the quick response my friend, I  hope to plant my first fig trees this year. I'm learning more and more about figs and hope that I grow one that tastes good. I never knew there were so many varieties. ~CODY

Welcome to the forum Cody.

I live about 2 1/2 hours north west of you in the west end of KY.

There is another fella near Morgantown, Ky who grows some figs he got from Italy. I haven't heard from him in awhile though.

Have you found any fig trees growing in the Nashville area yet? If not just keep your eyes peeled, It will happen sooner or later.

It is always interesting to find some varieties that are doing well in your own area. You may be able to acquire cuttings from the owner or at least try to find out the variety so you'll know what does well in Nashville.

I've found a few in my area that have been growing and surviving our zone 6 winters for some time.

It's an addiction Cody. But it seems to be pretty safe and it's legal as well :-) .

saxonfig thanks for stopping in and giving me your attention. I recieved the very first response today, to my want ad on craigslist, and the grower said he has a brown turkey fig about 10 years old growing in his back yard. He said he took some cuttings and is gonna try to root them in a wet ziplock by the window. I still don't know exactly where he lives, but I'm patiently waiting to here from him again. Have you ever recieved a cutting in the mail, more specificly, did it have roots? Again, Thanks from your neighbor to the south ~Cody

Cody,  I have received numerous cuttings in the mail. Mostly thanks to the kind generousity of many fellow forum members.

It's not a good idea to ship cuttings with roots in the mail because the delicate roots can be damaged in transit. Small trees are a different story and can usually be shipped without a problem.

If you would like a few cuttings Cody, shoot me a PM or email and I'm sure I can help out in getting you started.

It never crossed my mind to look for fig cuttings on ebay. I think I'm old fashioned.

cody welcome to the forum you can find most anything you want to know by doing a search of the forum.  Again welcome and watch out for the fig bug it bites and next thing you know you have 50 trees....not always a bad thing...

Just be careful if you order.  There are some folks on eBay that are out to rip you off and do stupid things like sell you Brown Turkey or some unknown cutting and call it something else that is much more desirable.

Always know who you're dealing with beforehand.  Search this forum for "ebay" to find out who the veteran fig guys are on eBay, and to see who the scammers are.

Cody,

Jason is right. Although there are honest fig sellers on eBay [many of them are members here], there are those who scam people by misrepresenting the variety of fig[s] they are selling.

And, you can not just take the Feedback as the main criteria. This is because, unlike most other products you buy on eBay, a long time usually passes between the sale and when you can determine what the variety is...or isn't. At that point, it is too late to give feedback or change your original feedback on the transaction.

Welcome Cody, I live in East TN just off I-75..  I am pruning my trees now.  Send me a private message.  My trees are relative young but will share some cuttings.I shipped some cuttings in late Nov to a friend and they got lost in the mail. and I got an e-mail Jan 4th when they finally arrived at his house, many had rooted in transit. Treat cuttings with TLC and wait forever for roots to show or ship them round robin and they root.  Go figure.

@ northeastnewbie That would be too awesome, I have enough land for it, if fig trees like clayey soil.
@ Jason, Thanks for the good advice. I just want a hardy zone 6 or 7 fig tree that ain't prude. I'll tryout some special varieties if you tell me they can survive Nashville's weather. Really, on that matter, I'm all ears! By the way, my sister lives in Virginia Highlands, I did too till recently.
@ Paul and Irene that is really really sad, and I hope I don't get fooled.
@ nkesh099, Thanks for that info., damn, I hope you fly (lol)

From the North to the South
and the East to the West
I'm gonna find the fig
that I like best                   Thanks again! ~Cody

@ sirlampsalot you are the greatest.!!! Thanks for your generosity. I have separated the cuttings, wrapped them in damp papertowels and placed them on my entertainment center where its exactly 79 degrees. I hope there not too damp, I will be keeping an eye on them and keep you posted. ~Cody
