Alma on Ebay

if i tell my 9 yr old to wait.. he says "wait? i don't wait.. there is no sucha thing as wait. i do it now". i want my fig trees to be like him. x)

I also bought one and received it last Thur.  It looked like it was circular root bound (similar to newnandawg's tree on the right) from a 1 gallon nursery pot.  I planted it as is in a 3 gallon nursery pot since I couldn't work the roots lose at all.  What would have been a better method to deal with the roots?  Should I have cut the "ring" of roots vertically then spread them out as best I could while filling the pot with potting mix?

@ omotm...Steve, I use a razor knife on smaller root balls until I can work them by hand, and on larger plants like 10gal., 15gal., and above, I use a machete(no big swings, just wrist action) until I take off enough material to work the roots manually...at first I was concerned that I would damage the tree, but then I realized that if I did not free up the roots, the tree was eventually going to die from strangulation anyway...about two weeks after the root work and repotting, the tree took off and started to grow vigorously.

Potted May 30th.

Steve, yours looks a lot better than the two I received. Neither has a leaf opened as of today only a couple of buds on one and nothing on the other.

Mike,

It has been warm here......90's during the day and high 60's to low 70's at night with a couple of thunderstorms thrown in.........might be the difference.

Could be Steve. Eighties with lots of rain here

My two are still closed as well. They have been outside all the time, about 90 every day. But they are not dead, the buds are plump

How is everyone's Alma's doing?

Both of mine have leafed out really well over the last two weeks. How about yours Jarrett?

I didn't get it yet as I didn't know if it will survive zone 6A. However I am thinking about it for the price right now.

I just went out and shot a couple of pics of my Alma's. As you can see I'm still waiting for the bud to break on 1 branch. I also have a third in a 1 gallon that I cut off the big one. It was a sucker and it was already bare root so I went for it.

Mine leafed out, not as green as Tami"s but they are going fast.

Mine are leafed out and looking very nice now.

goss

I bought 3 Alma and 3 Black Mission and all were very well packed and all have flourished very well.  I hope they have a few different ones later.

Good Morning Danny,
I wrote to him to thank him after I heard everyone was buying them and wish him well on the PTSD of shipping :) I asked about other varieties and he said that's all they have for figs but he said they do have other plants. I checked his "other items" and there was nothing that I was really interested in but he was such a nice guy!

I bought 2 and they are leafing out quite nicely..

Jarrett,

I'd give it a try, not too terribly pricey for an experiment to see if it likes your weather.  Compare my post #54 to today's photo below.

I'll give it a try, but you don't think that its too late to start since they ship dormant?

Well I got one at last, actually they sent me two for the price of one. hopefully it isn't too late for it to start growing before winter comes alone in 2-3 months.

Fantastic Jarrett,
They seem so very healthy. Mine show no signs of virus and are growing like weeds. If you keep it fed I think it will do great and next year you should have figs on it. I made the mistake of not feeding mine on time so I am experiencing some slow growth at the moment. I got some Indonesian bat guano and watered all the figs with it on Tuesday. I saw growth literally overningt on the larger figs and the dwarf papaya. Now I'm trying to decide what other stuff to put in. They were all planted with worm castings and compost so I got complacent.
Very good luck on your Alma, I really like these.

I hope you all keep up with this post. I would like to try an Alma, but it's supposed to be a very late ripening fig. I don't think my zone will support very late. So, hopefully you guys in short season zones can prove otherwise.

I promised I would post a picture and he's finally getting interactive so here it is.
