Almost 100 year old fig tree

The other young figs must be growing from underground roots,so they are identical and males.
What you can do is graft common female scions or Smyrna type on the old plant or on the young ones, and you will have fruiting plants much faster than if you grow new plants from cuttings.
Make a project of learning how to graft and you will learn a good Hobby.
Graft Smyrna on it ,only if you know ,the fig wasp is present in your area,if not graft common Ficus Carica, like Black Mission.

Thank you Herman2. We will do that. Is introducing the appropriate wasps environmentally awkward?
Is it done? Do folk in the foothills of Central Ca raise those figs? Sounds interesting. A fig farm!
"And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go..."

Fig wasp was introduced in Central Valley, because the Winter are very mild, but I am not sure it will survive over the Winter in your climate.
Growing common fig ,by grafting to your old tree is your best option.
Not only that but in my opinion Black Mission is not inferior to Smyrna fig.

I'd say it a little more strongly:  I prefer Black Mission to Smyrna (or Calimyrna)... I think Black Mission tastes better.  Just my opinion.

Fig wasps can be blown 100 miles from their origin.  If the prevailing summer winds are uphill you may have wasps visiting your tree.

Thank you. Black Mission grafting research will begin!
Am I limited to certain varieties?
My husband asks " Are they sure wasps won't do any good?"
If its certain its a male Caprifig, it won't make them any better I guess.

You're limited to about 1528 varieties, +/- 1000 or so.  The more the merrier.  In February Jon sells cuttings and posts about it here.  Get as many as you can and graft them all on.  The best fig fruit salad tree ever!

Yippee!!!

I'm glad to hear the mystery has been solved. Sorry it isn't the answer you were looking for, but you have options, and now with knowledge you can stop wasting time with experiments and figure out to get yourself some fresh figs :)

Yes, thank you!
