An end to the contained figs in sight

  • jtp

My fig shuffling days may be coming to a close soon. My wife and I found a property that may allow us to finally realize our homesteading dream and put (almost) everything currently in pots into the ground.

It's 1.3 acres of good farmland with rich, dark soil. It is still realtively close to the NC coast, so we will continue to enjoy our great climate. If we get it (and I think we will, barring any issues with appraisals and inspections), there will be plenty of room for figs, pomegranates, grapes, berries, nut trees, and lots of herbs and vegetables. The 5-year plan also includes chickens, ducks, a few goats and maybe even a pig or two. The land is a piece of a much-larger former farm and is a big, blank slate, just waiting to be filled. A lot of work is ahead but it is very exciting.

P.S. - The new venture will include fighting off deer, rabbits and possibly wild hogs, but my wife has already agreed to lots of fencing, a crossbow and a big freezer.

Ha!  Got a kick out of that one.  :)
I hope it all works out for you.  Sounds like a perfect piece of land.

Grow some brown turkey figs if you get pigs, you could feed them all to them and some acorns if you can give up the space.

fig stuffed venision.. fig braised with wild hog.. rabbit and fig.. sounds like a plan :)

That sounds like fun!

Hope it all works out. :)

That sounds good John:)  Space is always a good thing.

Nice! All the good things I dream of.

Huge congrats! I hope to be fighting the same battles in a few years, minus the hogs. I hope the inspection goes well.

That is fantastic news, I am so happy for you. The deer will be delicious but check on the hog. There was a warning here (Texas) not long ago, about some parasite I believe it was, making the meat bad. Barring that LUAU!!!!

Sounds great John, congrats! Name the pig Prosciutto for me.

sounds like paradise....

Thanks, everyone. My goal is this: Within 5 years, sit down on the back deck for dinner - figs, goat cheese, Prosciutto and wine all from our own efforts. Who knows? Maybe we'll add a beeswax candle from our hives for ambience. :)

Congratulations!
