An experiment posting a 'photo, and an apology to the BTurkey

OK guys, I get it. I should know better, right? Well, here's another go. This time I think I might have figured out how to reduce the file size so I can post photos directly instead of via a hosting w/site.

And I'm using this apology to our BT as the excuse to have another go. I dunno if it's coz of the blistering summer we've had this year, but our BT has (almost) redeemed itself. I still think our Italian Purple is the better of the two (tho both are easily trumped by 'tasty but fussy' and Gk Yellow), but her indoors actually prefers the BT to the Italian!!! Amazing. I was gonna take the damn thing out and just admit I made a huge mistake. It has now earned itself a reprieve. I know some of you out there will take issue with my leniency, but my marriage has to come first!

PS For those who want to know, I just re-sized the photo in Paint using the pixel count, and presto-chango, file size magically reduced and (hopefully) accepted by the site.

EDIT: PPS They're now so sweet that even the local wildlife is taking an interest - mainly wasps, & the occasional ant. I've taken to wrapping semi-translucent plastic bags around them to protect them against the £$%&*?! critters. Also seems to accelerate ripening, presumably coz they create a mini-greenhouse around the fig. Anyone out there have any better ideas?

2nd EDIT: Glad to see it's worked this time. Now I know how to post a photo - yippeeeee.

Way to go and by the way I see nothing really wrong with BT either.  It's certainly wise to keep the wife happy.

Hey Goss,

Well, I'm glad there's at least one person out there in Figland who agrees with her indoors!

Hello Costas,
Congratulations and Thanks for posting the picture.
Judging by the leaf, that might be what we call an "English Brown Turkey" or "Eastern Brown Turkey" here, they are actually one of the Brown Turkeys with a good reputation : ). Can you post close ups of a few leaves and figs? Thanks.

<edit> Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Hey Pete,

Thx, that's good to know, & gives me even more confidence that I made the right decision about keeping it after all.

Pics? Sure thing, but unfortunately I just gave the current ripeners to a neighbour - we've been drowning in figs over the last 3 days, just can't keep up, and there's a limit to how many we can eat. If I had more time on my hands, guess fig jam comes into consideration.

Anyway, reckon I'll have some photos for you in a day or two. Also, look out for 'photos of my 'tasty but fussy' (variety unknown, but I hope will be ID'd by someone on the forum) which I'll be posting around the same time. There's a humdinger of a sample coming to the end of its ripening, and might even post a 'photo while it's still on the tree, just out of curiosity to see if there are any prelim. tentative guesses out there.

Great work on the photos.  It's all about the weather and climate as far as fig flavor is concerned.  Dennis loves his BT but he's in NC and gives his figs perfect care.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right on there Bob - weather is everything.

And thx for the compliment re photos. Have you seen my photos on my other current thread re. ID on 'Tasty but Fussy'?

Hello again Pete,

Pics of BT fruit and leaves as promised, and since my TbF has also been identified as a BT as well on another thread (an ID about which I have serious doubts), I have included pics of this alongside the BT for comparison.

As you can see, they look quite different. They also taste very different, trees 'behave' differently, etc etc. If my TbF is also a Brown Turkey, then it's got to be a radically different cultivar that bears little semblance to the more common BT varieties. The only resemblance I can see between the two is that the flesh appears to have a similar hue, but that's about it, and I'm not sure that's enough to positively ID it as a BT.

EDIT: The orangey-brown blush with just a hint of pink on the TbF skin shows up quite well in this sample. By contrast, the BT is quite a deep purple, & has a different shape. Can 2 figs that look so different really belong to the same variety? I just don't believe it.

Costas,
From the fig pictures, it does not look like an English Brown Turkey, but it looks like a cultivar that is currently being circulated on the West Coast (USA), an unknown named Gene's Vashon, and its noted as being from Sicily, so you may have better access to information on your side of "the Pond".
Good Luck.

Pete - Now that's interesting. It was labeled as a BT where I purchased it, one of our premier nurseries with a very good reputation (Ruxley Manor Gardens in SE London).

If you're saying that ID is wrong, then hb's idea that my TbF is an English BT could well be back in the running.

Thx for the info. - very useful, & something I'll need to look into when I've got a bit more time on my hands.

Costas,
I'm not saying that they are wrong, I'm comparing it to the named cultivars that are available here. It is entirely possible that we are wrong, after all you are closer to the source.

Understood mate. So basically, jury still out. & just 1 angry man.

I couldn't resist taking a quick peak at a few sites. Gene's Vashon looks like a pretty good match to me for my alleged BT. So much for reputable nurseries. But if the supplier lies to them, they are prob. not to blame for being deceived. Either way, so glad I didn't carry out my initial plan to chop off its head.

So, to summarize: turns out I almost certainly don't have a BT after all, and my TbF is more likely a Lebanese Red than a BT. My only inventory that I can be reasonably certain about now stand as:

Italian Purple
Greek Yellow (Zailata)
Greek Green (aka 'white', but not a true white of course, coz it actually ripens green)
Greek Black (but which I believe is actually a very dark purple)

A modest collection compared to most members on this forum, but then I don't have a whole lotta room for much more, and this is London after all.
