ancient fig?

Hi everyone , I really enjoy this forum, I've been growing figs for 4 years now. I have learned a lot (much from figs4fun) I 've been wondering what are the oldest varieties ? I would like to get a true "ancient"  Israeli fig tree but it seems like all the varieties grown there now are imports. please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

By the way; I'd love to post the varieties I grow but I think my local nursery has a labeling problem, because my kadotas are violet colored, my brown turkeys don't turn brown.  and my Celeste's grow brebas .  but that's another post LOL

Wow gentlemen, Thanks for the warm welcome. OkieBob will be deleted A.S.A.P

Welcome to the forum.  I found this article a while back and it has some good info.

Hey Bob, don't run off. Today is Friday and maybe everyone was busy. I know I was. I just want to welcome you to the site and I'm sure others will chime in. I know nothing about Israeli figs. Good luck.
"gene"

welcome!! i am growing an unknown from that region i think is a khurtmani.

not sure how long that has been grown there, but ill have cuttings if interested!

welcome, fridays are usually bit slow. but this forum tend to be very fast with reply to the post. as to ancient figs.. no idea. i typically looks for ones tasting good rather than what history it has other than country of origin, and what interesting story it might have.

Welcome to the forums. Figs are thought to be the oldest cultivated fruit crop dating to some 5000 bc if memory serves. Now I don't know of any that are old like that. I'm a newbie to figs. I have only been growing about 5 years.

But with that said I have learned a lot and myself would like to get some older figs that don't need the wasp. I am not sure that there are any that fit the bill. Pehaps Jon will chime in. If he don't know I'm sure he could point in the right direction.

Well Ok Bob...hope you come back soon....I am interested in the Violet colored Kadotas...LOL..........I think the fig originated with Adam and Eve.....I kind of think the leaves weren't originally itchy until they were disobedient....My friend said the tree not to touch was an apple tree...???........I also agree Jon probably has a clear answer........
Welcome Bob !!!!!

My thoughts on the subject of adom and eve. From my study of the scripture I think the forbidden fruit was a fig not an apple. The fruit was the fruit of knowladge of good and evil. Once the fruit was eaten their eyes were open. And they dressed with fig leaves. If it was a fig they ate they would be at the tree right where the leaves are. Figs are called the fruit of the Gods, and we refer to them as the fruit of knowladge.

Just my point of view.

Dave, it seems that most opinions are that the pomegranate was the forbiden fruit. One pom variety is named 'Eve', fwiw.

Welcome to the forum. Don't worry about the labels, as you learn more you may figure them out.  If they are good figs, the label does not matter unless you are selling or trading them.  They didn't ask for your pedigree when you brought them home, so don't worry about theirs, LOL.  Look at other posts about ID'ng figs and post similar pictures and let the collective expertise of the forum help ID them.

I've read that Dr. Levin thought Adam and Eve originally ate a pomegranate... didn't get to read yet why he thought so though.

If that's the case then the Pomegranate leaves didn't cover much;)

i sure wouldn't wanna wear fig leaves on, um, certain parts. personally, i always thought that eve leading the fall was just a story that got into the bible because  men wrote it. everyone knows that in a relationship males lead the way in things like that.

Haha Rafed, didn't think about that :D

Vasilika Sika a Greek variety has a pretty long history

Hello OkieBob,

I look at the posts everyday and I absolutely didnt see it.  I would have remebered the name.

The commonest fig sold here is the sbayi it has a green yellow ext   with dark parts or stripe and red pulp abit acidic and very sweets..
anyhow id take any ripe fig anyday and still say it was good.
they also sell the roxo  type (brazil brown turkey).. but there alot of old varieitis here too eaten by private collector like me that are not know to the general population.
okie bob welcome i would answer but you caught me in a day which i had mouth ulcer from eating too many figs maybe.  does anyone suffer from this? shouldi blame the figs:) ?  maybe i ate unripe ones too..

At least you dont have mouth sores as it seems.. when i lough it hurts ..
LOL :)

I came across a bible verse about old figs.I mean I guess they're old its in the bible. Its jeremiah 24:3.
"Then the lord said unto me, what seest though jeremiah? And I said figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten they're so evil."

Does anyone have an evil bible era fig?

you mean you are looking for varieties that where found in the bible?

the sycamore.
more than that i don't know but ill try to find.

Travis, you've got me wondering what a evil fig is...caprifig?  Some super unfortunate flavor combination?  I've only ever tasted the good figs.
