ancient fig?

Welcome

The evil figs are black madiera, Peters honey, Col De Dame Grise and Saint Rita.
Save your selves!!! send them all to me. I will dispose of them properly. You can save yourselves by snipping braches off and sending them as well. that will destroy the evil.

Elin, do you know what if Sbayi is a common type?  I really want one but I doubt I'll ever end up living somewhere with fig wasps.  Also, have you ever heard of Ghzali? I got a cutting from a guy on ebay in Palestine, but I can't seem to find much about it. I found a research article where they did genetic testing on it but they didn't say much about it other than that it's grown in Israel, along with some of the more recognizable names (at least to people in the US)

Hi Josh ,

Sbayi is common.

If you got a Ghzali its one of the best - Trust me on a good year it beats Sbayi , Hmadi and Hmari all together with honey all over. it has an open eye though- prepare those organza bags.

Thanks Elin! Mine is still small but hopefully it is what he said it is then :)

This may not be much help but I've read that Saint Jean is an old one from Roman times, Yellow Neeches can be traced back to Jamestown, VA circa 1604 or so and that Battaglia Green which was from Foley Castle in Petersburg, Va and may be the fig gifted from Jefferson in 1783.
BTW - all three of these are worth adding to any collection.
Welcome to the forum.

I am starting to collect figs from Israel and am interested in trading.

Josh, I sure hope your Ghzali is true!  Maybe I can get cuttings from you when it grows?!

Michael, I enjoy reading history stuff and to know history on figs is really great. It would be great to see a thread on the history of some of these great figs. And, now I want to add Saint Jean and Yellow Neeches (I have Battaglia Green) to my wish list...lol. Thanks for the history lesson on these figs.

Meg,
I collect historic figs to give to the Center For Historic Plants at Monticello. The goul being to have all the figs that Jefferson COULD have had at Monticello.
I had read (on f4f) that the Yellow Neeches was not a good fig flavor-wise but both the trees I have produced the tastiest little yellow figs last year.
I'm swamped currently but if you contact me in April I can help you with cuttings.

Michael, you have an interesting perspective with regard to Jefferson at Monticello. How wonderful & what great work you do for the Center for Historic Plants. And, I must say that I never knew Jefferson had such a deep interest in figs and, from what I read briefly, a deep interest in many fruit trees. I will have to read more on this subject, which is very interesting to me. And, thank you for your generous offer of cuttings. I will reach out to you in April.
