And so it begins!

Thanks to the generosity of a couple of forum members (names withheld to protect them from PM assault) I am well on my way on my fig collection.  I had a few varieties already locally sourced and now have cuttings from 28 more varieties rooting.  That is my incubator if you are wondering..no I don't have it on just using it to store the bagged cuttings.

It will be 4 weeks tomorrow  since the first cuttings were bagged up and already have a bunch rooted and cupped with another dozen+ needing cupped up today.

Have already started the prep work for their locations outside and 6 will go around this live oak spaced at 16 feet apart.  Irrigation line with risers have been installed.  It will be awhile but want the mulch to start rotting down.   Every fruiting plant I own is on the water system so it takes awhile to get all the beds up and running and a lot of trenching which takes awhile even with a whomper.

Another 15 plants will go down this fence line but thankfully the water system is already there.  Rest will be scattered around the front as well as the back and I have room for about 40 varieties total but that will take awhile.  All in all it will be about 10 utility trucks worth of wood chips, sure glad they are free and delivered to the house. Not sure how many hundred more feet of irrigation line it will take.  I made 50 more risers yesterday out of electrical conduit.  It is a good winter project.

Wow!  Ambitious project you have there!  Good luck with it!

Looks good Willis and sounds like you have a good plan

i love your plan and large space! your plants and trees will do very well.

Congratulations!  Best of luck!

Thanks all:)  up to 45 cupped up.

Will......those 6 fig trees planted around that live oak is going to be an awesome sight....please post some pictures when you get that phase in place. Good luck with the whole project....very ambitious undertaking.
                                                  Regards,

Thanks foreverFigs,

It will take some time to get all the beds arranged but what else are us retired people supposed to do?  Can anyone recommend a decent spacing for a hedge?  I was thinking 10' apart down the fence line?

I'd worry about all that Spanish Moss sucking up my figs!

Suzi

There is a lot of spanish moss:) and airplants and greenfly orchids in those big trees.  The trees you can see behind the house down by the lake are HUGE 150+ year old liveoaks.  I would have so much more room if they were not there but they are just too old and too majestic to take a saw to.
