And we worry about mediums

Nelson, where are those pics from?

Pete

Pete the fig on the palm tree is in Arizona I believe some of the others are from Turkey, Croatia & Italy.

The last two photos were taken in San Vito Lo Capo in northwest Sicily, the road pictured is via Dante Alighieri (hence Via D. Alighieri)

Nice, but a little misleading. You find one fig tree in a palm tree. A few in sidewalk cracks and walls, but what percentage of fig seeds in those environments didn't make it? 99.999% ??  Any medium works probably works at some % level, Still  nice pix.

I agree with Jon.

If you are flexible on your definition of a good growth then yeah no worries it can grow in any spot.

Is this all the result of some fig-loving bird randomly pooping off seeds?
Though fig seedlings seldom produce good fig-fruit, they sure manage
to survive in the most oddest places on earth!
To heck with any "best" fig potting medium....

Gorgi these are all seedlings, do they produce figs no Idea just liked the fact of how determined these seedlings are to survive even when there is no soil. Jon have you noticed any figs growing on palm trees in San Diego yet? Its Just a matter of time.

Nelson, No, but I have one that was growing in a palm tree in Santa Barbara, now known as Anacapa. Don't have pix of the parent, yet.

In in the evening of mid-October 2007, Irene and I were walking through Zafra [38.422764,-6.415801], a small town in the Extremadura region of southwestern Spain. On the inside edge of the sidewalk, where it meets the opening of a building, there was a tiny crack in the sidewalk...probably the size of a quarter. Out of that crack grew a fig tree, only a few inches tall:

I took this picture of Irene just a few feet away, so you can get an idea of the size of the sidewalk squares:

Considering that there was nothing but concrete or asphalt for at least 20 feet in any direction...not even any weeds. And no fig trees in sight, so those roots must have grown a long way, under really bad conditions [under the cement, enduring the blistering heat/dryness of an Extremaduran summer], just to find that crack and come to the surface.

man, figs are tough!

It is common to see fig trees growing in the cracks of sidewalks in the middle east...

Its a tough tree I think.
