Anyone out there with experience and a fig critique on this variety? I live in zone 7 on east coast. I'm in Va about 50 miles west of DC.
I've heard good reviews from 1 source and there's some not so good ones on here but they are west coast growers. I got this from Monticello but other then it also being at Read's in the UK there just isn't alot available in the way of  - well, any info.

Mine does pretty well in south jersey. Not as slow of a grower as it had beed said. 

Thanks Gina I did see that but they are talking about a tiny sample size and the only one that seems to have any age on it is in SD. And that was 2007. Re reading that thread they may be talking about just one Angelique plant.
It seems to have been condemned because it's not doing great in SD. I'm in Virginia which is a whole different climate.  
I'm going to Monticello next month and I'll get to see their's again.  
I have 6 1 gallon plants that are doing great.

And thanks Dan. Our eco micro climates are similar. My cuttings of this variety were very strong and did very well. They are getting very crowded in their pots and I get the feeling that if I transplanted them they'd take off. I haven't done as I expect to sell, trade, give away before they get too big. I'll keep a couple for my collection - maybe more if I can sample a fig at Monticello . . .

I think you are right to grow it out yourself. When I've searched for opinions on various varieties the past few months, I found great amounts of conflicting information. The variables for success can be tremendous - geographic location, temperature extremes, rain/irrigation, soil type/drainage, pH, exposure, fertilizing.. even the skill of the gardener, not to mention personal taste and aesthetic preferences. What grows very well for you might not be so good for someone else. The more information, the better.

My interest started because I wanted to have all of the figs that are at Monticello. They have a number of figs everyone else has and a lot can be bought from EL. But they also have some that they consider their historic collection. Bremo, Sotterley, Angelique, Marseilles, BT and a new one from Folly Castle that I'm giving them next month. I'll get to see these trees next month again. The last time I saw them they all looked great. It doesn't make sense that Thomas Jefferson would have kept Angelique as one of his three varieties if it were an inferior fig. So, yes I will grow it out and give it 5 years as I love an underdog.

Interesting.  I saw growing and tried my first fresh fig at Monticello!!

I snuck one that was growing in the shelter of one of the buildings.  That was almost 20 years ago.

I went to an Apple tasting at Monticello the fall of '07. At the time I collected heirloom apples (peaches, plums, etc.) After the tasting was over I was waiting for my girl friend to use the rest room and noticed a big fig bush. It was a Green Ischia (I had did not know that then) and had ripe figs. After about 15 of them I had zero interest in apples and went home and ordered 48 fig trees. This year I took cuttings from that fig and will now include in my collection.
So, Monticello holds a certain place for me in the whole "fig thing".

maybe we both started the hobby with the same fig bush??  Probably 700 miles away for me.

I had that fig in 1993, and not til 2009 when a small plant showed up at the spermarket here I thought I would try to grow them.  I must say I never forgot picking that one fruit.  My wife would not try it, however, assuming I was giveing her poison.....ha

Interesting that someone else was brave enough to try one.

One fruit this season, when weather was too cool, so lacked some sweetness and flavor. Next one looks set to get some more heat.

Did the Angelique at encanto come from Monticello? I was told EL brought this fig into the US, but I don't know if that's true. If so, that would explain how Monticello got it and perhaps how it ended up at encanto. But is that the true story? Is there only the one example spread about fairly thin and has this fig also been sold as the MdDS? I find it odd I can't find anyone that's produced any real numbers of figs from this cultivar. It sure is a pretty little fig.
