Another Brown Turkey?

I was going to add this to Jason's thread, but thought better of it.   Is this a brown turkey?  The fruit has a cavity in the center.  The unripe breba I photographed fell off while I was trying to get a pic of it.   This tree is from a cutting I took  two years ago in Lake Havasu ago and that tree produced a lot of very good figs.

These figs do very well in our hot dry Arizona climate.  Day after day temps are over 100, often over 110.  The tree in the pic has added 22 inches of new growth to a  branch  already this year. 

I am thinking these trees need lots of heat to produce good tasting figs.   The bad rap they have gotten on this forum may be due to the fact that most of the trees are being grown in a not hot enough environment.

Anyway...here are some pics.   What do you all think?  Brown Turkey?

Thanks, Joe.  I agree. 

These trees have grown so well for me that I have offered cuttings and trees to  several people.  But if it's  going to be a "turkey" in a cooler climate...sending cuttings north would be a waste of time.

Did it taste like cloudy, sweet water?  If yes, it might be a BT.  Fruit doesn't quite look right, though.  And that leaf on the plate ... the leaf variation on my BT is all over, and it occasionally has leaves like those (it's not the dominant leaf pattern, though)

That is the predominant leaf pattern.  These figs taste good, Jason.  Not too sweet, but with a taste I think of as "figgy", and with a slight crunch from the seeds. (The breba wasn't so hot, but it was unripe.  Also, when ripe they are a deep purple).  The center does have that little  cavity (which is hard to see due to my less than stellar photography), which is why I'm starting to think BT.

Y'all know where the Brown Turkey fig got its name? 

If you view a mature BT from the back-end, it looks exactly like a turkey with spread-out tail-feathers. The stem represents the the turkey's neck and wattles.

BT isn't the only fig with interior cavity that fits your description.  Magnolia is the more likely culprit.

One the first 3 fig trees I ever bought came to me as a 'BT'.
It did give me plenty of fruit. Medium/large with a brownish skin.
Some were even lob-sided, more-so like the the traditional
turkey-dinner that my wife annually cooks at Thanksgiving time.
Sooo, (then naive me) I thought that is why maybe it is called a Brown Turkey.
Then came along a good fig expert of mine who said to me
(something to the effect):
The 'Turkey' part does not stand for any 'bird', but it stands
for a 'country'!

Later, I learned that it was not even a real true BT; go FIGure!

The poor Brown Turkey, step child of the fig world. I still like my so called Turkey no matter how disparaging the rest of the group feels. Productive, good grower and yes, tasty.

 I planted 4 BT, 4 Celeste and 3 BM this year. All of this came from Lowe's and are doing very well in ground. You have to plant what you can find.

Glad to know I am not alone in my admiration of the lowly BT   

When I read BM I was thinking Black Madeira, then I read the source, you must mean Black Mission. Boy if I can get Black Madeira at a box store I'm goin right now.

I think the majority of the hatred to the BT is a mind thing.
People picked up on it from others so they started to dislike like it as well.

I say give it a chance and you be your own judge about it.

My biggest problem with BT is that  the second someone sees a cavity in a fig, its automatically considered a  BT.


I have a Dark Greek fig that has a void and some chimed in that it was a BT. 

The other problem is that with so many named BT's out there, no way that Every single one is a BT in taste and color.

 I have 2 or 3 named Hardy chicago and the leaves are not the same but have not compared fruit yet.

It's a slippery slope. But I'm not a big fan of the BT I have tasted.

I had one many years back and it was not bad but it died overwintering in shed, i never ventured to get another as i later found better tasting figs.
But i will honestly say there usually a persons first or second fig plant and can teach one how to take care of a fig plant.
Heck Jon who does not like them probably as much as i don't care for white type figs even had one at one time i'm almost certain and may still have one.

If it weren't for Brown Turkey figs, I probably wouldn't be as interested in figs and I might not be here on this forum (that may make some BT lovers curse it!)... therefore, I owe it some gratitude to it, even with its simplistic lack of flavor.  BT was my first fig tree purchase at the local nursery, I should've probably picked the Celeste tree they had, but the BT actually had a single fruit on it, so that one was chosen.  Selfish, right?  We all want instant gratification, and once again the desire for instant gratification led me astray.

I'm with Martin, though.  Once I found better tasting figs, BT was the first to come out of the ground to make room for much better tasting figs.  Italian Honey is next to come out of my collection - I planted one in our community garden (ate a breba last week), and I've never been impressed with any green/honey figs as of yet, they seem watery and bland to me (same as BT).

Jason, I think we are all pretty much fig snobs on this foum, I include myself in that as well. I was perfectly happy with a couple trees for years and now I want every premium one out there as most of us do. Brown Turkey just doesn't hold any appeal for a fig snob. I guess I still like it because it is so trustworthy, so productive in growth and fruit. Oh and you and Martin should taste a JH Adriatic, that might alter your view of the white figs   

I have!   I posted a thread last year saying it was the best white fig I ever ate, and even appealed to Martin to give it a go ;)

Maybe you and I can persuade him to turn from the dark side

After having such a mind blowing experience with JH Adriatc, I've been actively seeking out white figs with red to purple interior just to make sure I'm covering the bases.  Calvert, Verte, Strawberry Verte, Col de Dame, etc.   but I'm still on the dark side with Martin.  ;)

All of the above are excellent figs to rival any darks

I think Martin is an undercover white fig lover. He talks about hating white figs so much he could quite possibly mean the opposite.

Blb and Rafed gave me a good chuckle as i just came in from watering my fig trees to read the forum.
