Another old world fig story

One of the things I like about figs are the warm stories associated with homeland and family connections. Here is another. To read the entire article, go to the link.

Stromboli is a volcanic island on the north side of Sicily near Messina. There is even a town there with the name FicoGrande. And the connection is with New Zealand.

Fig tree link to family's past

"Stromboli people would often take this fig wherever they went in the world, wherever they travelled," he explains.

"The four places they settled – New York, Buenos Aires and Melbourne, and Island Bay in Wellington – I guarantee the fig tree will be growing in those areas."

Gerard's own fig tree – which he has given away so many cuttings from – was given to him by his mother, Francesca Margherita Hindmarsh (nee Moleta), now 93, from the tree transplanted to her family garden at Berhampore in Wellington where Gerard grew up.

"My mother presented me with these fig cuttings when I moved to Golden Bay in 1976."

Nice story.

Gina,

I LOVE those stories!  Makes any plant special.  Olives!  OMG!  I collect those too, and I know from the Greeks exactly how to brine them!

I don't think there is an Olive forum, but I don't really need it.  Love this fig one though, and love the camaraderie here!

If you know of an Olive Tree forum, please tell me!  Got the wine grape and citrus ones down.
