Malta Black.......

Malta black.jpg

Nice tree! Healthy looking.

Just a few more weeks!  But please post the drama of the opening.  We love that!

Awesome! Mike was so generous and gave me one even though I'm a beginner; he really boosted my gardening confidence. It's still a baby but it's nice to see from your picture what I can expect :)

Willis, that is looking really good. That is one of the best all around figs I have in my collection. I hope you will agree.

It was planted a year ago March and did produce a couple figs last year that were so so at best.  Looking forward to these.

If anyone wants to set up a swap this fall, I will offer cuttings from one or more of my trees (see link below) in exchange for cuttings of Malta Black and/or Marseilles Black VS

Wills they look great + a healthy looking tree! Love to hear how they taste when you try them.

Hey Wills, looks great, I need to get some tips on growing conditions since I am 3 hours south of you. My MB are still in the diaper stage.

Wayne,

That does remind me I owe you an email:)

Here they are pretty self reliant..I mulch them heavily but once our rains start they grow like weeds if they are in ground.  The bigger pots and I mean big as in 30 gallons do fine but small 1-3 gallons are a challenge due to the sun.  I have 1 of everything in the ground.  Guess I am lucky as we do not have bad nematode problems here and the mulch keeps what we do have away.  I know some people like Olga who is straight across the state from me has problems with them even getting in to her pots if she has them on bricks, yikes.  Out of an abundance of caution I leave the pots on 6 inches of wood chips, better safe than sorry.

Interesting, I am still amazed at what I do not know. I will be putting my pots on mounds of mulch. My in-ground are planted with a mixture of black cane soil, Lee County compost(free), home grown compost and heavy mulch on top.  This ( I believe) helps prevent nematodes, at least I have not had problems (yet) where a neighbor plants straight into the sand and has problems. I will be asking for more advice as time goes. Thanks.

The nematodes want hot dry sand so anything we can do to make the soil cooler and moist helps.  The thing is there are a few types of bad root knot nematodes and if you happen to be in an area that has the bad strain you will have serious problems.

Nice Wills, I have one fig one my plant. Can't wait to taste it!

Nice healthy plant, Wills. Mine is about the same size but will ripen its many figs later than yours because due to die back from a late freeze earlier this year.

Malta Black is an awesome fig, it is vigorous grower even in partial shade my 2nd year (1st year in ground) has over 20 figs. Mine tasted real good last year.
