any Dark Skinned fig suggestions for PNW (Vancouver bc)

My brown turkey hasnt given me ripe fruit for the past few years but some of that could be due to my ignorance on figs.  I'm looking for a variety that will be decently productive and provide ripe fruit.  I'm getting a mix response on Negronne as it may not provide ripe fruit in our climate.

None of the black figs sold in Vancouver/Fraser Valley will give a good main crop. For green figs, reliable ones are Desert King, Latarrula, Gilette.

Try Osborne Prolific, Dauphine, Ronde de Bordeaux. I have gotten many ripe figs from Hardy Chicago, some from MVS and Gino.

Alittle help from a greenhouse would help. Grow them in pots.

Yes i would need to grow the figs in pots.  Do you know of a nursery in the lower mainland which may have one of the varieties you mentioned?

I will not have help of a greenhouse so i would like a fig that wouldnt need one

The stores in Vancouver/Fraser Valley generally do not sell these specialty variants except for Osborne Prolific. Adriano from Toronto and Dany from Montreal sells them. Check Montreal Figs website and there is a link there to Dany's website in Montreal.

The only fig(not dark) that will work very well here is Desert King. Latarrula will give you a crop but not as plentiful as DK. Both these variants do not need Green House and many are grown in Vancouver.

Hi Paully, I was reading one of your older posts where you stated that you;ve had reliable ripe figs from Negronne and also vern's brown turkey.  Were those figs in a greenhouse?

Thanks again

Sort of with polycarbonate sheets lean to. When I have them in-ground and in pots without aid of polycarb.sheets trapping heat -- no ripe figs. The garden centers helpers have no clue as to what really works in terms of ripening as well as ripening with taste instead of flat bland taste. I was at a garden center last week and they have many Atreanos, VBT, BT, Mission, Peters Honey, Stella and I can say none will really work in our cool summers unless we have a nice Indian summer. Like last year, spring was late and it was a bad year for coloured/dark figs. Only DK delivered full breba crop & Latarrula delivered half main crop. Another variant that works reasonably well is Longue d'Aout. Not sold in Vancouver -- check with Adriano.

Best bet now is Osborne prolific for dark figs. I am trialing Dauphine, Granthams Royal, Ronde de Bordeaux etc.

It looks like another later spring this year as the has been below normal.  Btw, do you remember approximately when the figs came out of dormancy last year?

I've heard Barbillone might be a good one. Quite rare though.
