Jason,
I visited Germany in the last week of April. I was in Freiburg, which is in southwest Germany. They grow figs there. I was told that the local variety is called "bauer", which translates to "farmer". A local told me that they protect the fig trees in the winter for the first three years, then after that they can withstand winters. I believe that Freiburg has a milder climate than the Munich area. But keep on the lookout while you're there. You may be surprised and find people growing figs.
