Any fig varieties from the Azores?

My wife's parents are from the Azores so I am thinking it would be nice if I could find a fig from where they grew up. I know Madeira has quite a few types so I am assuming there must be a few from the Azores. Any help is appreciated.

Here are some that Adriano has in Canada.
Bagalhouce
the moonshine fig ,from Pico, Azores . A small white fig,
very sweet.
Capelas
It's trees are slow growing and spreading, from St. Michael,Azores. One of the best figs in the North Hemisphere if planted in the ground. Good tree for growing in a pot. Fruit is large and of outstaning quality. Breba is huge. Very sweet even in cold weather.

Interesting. Too bad they are stuck up there in canada.

John the azores has quite a few figs but the same issue as in Madeira allot of people just dont remember or know what variety it is. Adriano has a few he collected from different islands of the Azores.

Bagalhounce - is from Pico Island

Capelas is from Sao Miguel Island

Sao Jorge - from Sao Jorge Island

Figo Pera- not sure wich of the azorian islands its from but looks like a nice fig.

There are allot more that have not been collected yet.

John dont worry just because were up north dont mean we are not willing to send you some cuttins. I will try to pull some strings and see if I can get you some cuttings this fall of some of the varieties above.

I've been interested in Capelas since I first read that description a few years ago. Is there a US source?

Caples from what I remember has a quite good taste. It give both a breba and main crop.

here is some of the information I found out about Capelas

This variety came from the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of Azores. Probably, the name Capelas comes from the parish of Capelas in the Azores and this can be assumed as the place of origin (In portuguese capelas means parish). It is bifara and is a common fig type.

(I posted it on my website...)

Thanks for all of the info. I think I may have found a source for plants in the fall.

Capelas is a Town or district in the city of Ponta Delgada wich is in the island of Sao Miguel.

Anybody know of any from Sao Miguel that are deep purple and white.

The purple look like nothing I have seen anywhere. There are a bit larger than Celeste but deeper in color. The leaves, though, are a bit like Celeste.

Dominick I have tried contaction one fo the professors that deals with aggriculture in the University of the Azores. Hopefully he will reply soon and I will try and get some more info on common figs grown in the Azores.

Not to confuse- there is one deep purple and another white- I'll try to get pics.

Thanks

Dominick what shape is the white fig?

Let me take pics Stay on for a few minutes

Both trees reportedly brought over years ago from Sao Miguel Island by Immigrant in New Bedford, MA

Red

Here's the White- No ripe fruit

Unripe fruit

Purple im not 100% sure but the white I can almost say for certain it is Cotio. If that fig ripens greenish yellow and flat and super sweet 100% cotio.

Cótio (syn. Malaguenho Branco). Described by Mello Leotte (1901) and Bobone

(1932)—the latter with illustrations—as the most important commercial variety of

Algarve. The orchards of Lameira are composed almost wholly of Cótio trees. At

Cacela, it is known as Malaguenho Bravo.

Breba crop none. Second-crop figs medium, turbinate; neck short and thick or none;

stalk short;

Dominick,

How does that red one taste?

I really like it! It's not super sweet and has a bit of sharpness. Just a bit on the small side.

I guess a Celeste crossed with a Hardy Chicago. Not too subtle or strong.

I could pop these all day. A good alternative for those bored by Celeste or looking for a  more figgy tasting Celeste.

Has the wife's approval.
