Any one have a Hanc Mathes Atreano they want to sell cuttings or an airlayer from?

Atreano grows EXTREMELY well down in the hot humid south. However, the weather must be very hot and no rain. Mine is my largest in ground tree. The figs turn to mush if it doesn't have enough dry heat. And I don't care what some say, Atreano and Atreano Gold are 2 different trees. I have them both in the ground. The figs on my Atreano Gold are yellow. Now, I'll get off my soap box.

My best tasting figs from my Atreano was in 2010.

Hi Dennis-

Just curious....do both versions of Atreano that you are growing perform the same?  Is the difference only in the color of the figs?  Your comments are interesting.  When I was growing it. I had mine containerized so my growing experiences were quite different in contrast to your growing methods.  And my huge figs were deep, golden-yellow when they ripened.

Interesting to read that DRY heat, is a key factor.  Yet, another valuable clue.

Here's some photos of my Atreano-not.

Climate and soil can definitely influence leaf shape, though.

These pics of my Atreano didn't turn out all that well - sorry!  I think the settings on the camera were off.  Anyway, this will give you some idea.  A couple figs are on their way to becoming yellow.

Hi Dennis. I would be interested to know how you acquired "Atreano Gold".  I only know of one variety called Atreano, which was discovered and named by the late Hanc Mathies, who acquired this fig during a trip to Naples, Italy. It was one of the few varieties he kept in his collection shortly before he died.

Hanc shared cuttings of his Atreano with me and I grew a large potted tree. In turn, I have shared with others. It is a large, prolific fig that has to be dead ripe in order to appreciate any taste quality, IMO.  I ended up donating Hanc's fig to a local church in honor of him after his passing.

Tam, your leaves are consistent with the real Atreano. Bob, unfortunately, yours is not.

Your pictures look just like my leaves. I just went out and took a pic.

I have also attached a picture of figs from a month or so ago.

The leaves were what struck me when I got one from Paradise Nursery in 2005. They are generally five lobes and more "squarish" in shape than any other variety I've seen. I made a trip to Zaino's in 2008 (I think) and saw the same leaf shape on the Golden Atreano trees the had. Currently, I am growing two trees. One from Rolling River via Jon's annual fig cutting migration and another from a respected member of this forum from the northeast. Both trees have same fig pattern.

Normally I would agree it is difficult to ID a variety by leaf alone, but Atreano seems pretty straight forward.

Hi! Steve,

Thank you for sharing your photos. The leaves on my Atreano do look like yours.

Best,
Tam

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Best,

The Hanc Mathes Atreano from what I remember is also the same that was found at Belleclaires as he gave it to the brothers. Its been a while since I even thought about this topic.

Here is mine from Burntridge. It has a good sweet tasted but we have a hot dry climate.

Some good productivity on mine. Still in the static phase.

I know of 2 strains of Atreano -- Atreano OR(Original) and Atreano RR(Rolling River).

This is Atreano from Paradise Nursery.  The pulp seemed more pink than Jose's fig.

Paully,

Are the two strains you have different?

My Atreano that I grew from cuttings from Driveway Farmer was AWESOME. But it died over the winter. I was recently told by those in the know that Atreano and Atreano Gold are the same (Atreano from Belleclare, someone else propagated some and couldn't sell it as Atreano due to conflict with Belleclare.) Anyhow, Jazz Bass gave me an Atreano Gold and that was that.

But now, Dennis says they are different! How, different, Dennis?

ps how is your Violet Sepor doing this year Dennis?

Interesting topic. I also got my atreano from OGW. It died last winter but after reading this thread I may seek out a replacement from another source. Thanks.

@ James, according to Jon they are different. I imported the trees from Jon when phyto certification was cheap. Jon mentioned the
'OR' is better tasting. To me both do not meet our current taste preference -- may go to another home.

Thanks Paully. I have not tasted the figs from my current trees. RR seems to be struggling (yellow leaves and slower growth) more than the other one. I wish my Paradise Nursery Atreano had not died.

I don't know about atreano gold or bellaclare, but there are a few old topics from a few years ago about he original Hance Mathies atreano and the rolling river ateano being different for sure.

Just curious.  I order an Atreano FN cutting.  Is that the same thing?  It does not yet have ripe figs.
