Any South Florida Fig Growers?

Hi everyone,

I just recently retired, and have picked up fig growing as my new hobby. I planted my first four fig trees this year: Alma, Black Mission, Tiger Panache, and a Violette de Bourdeaux. I have been very fortunate to harvest several figs from my Black Mission and Tiger Panache, and now I am totally hooked!

As a retiree, I plan to split my time between California and the Philippines. Since Philippine weather is tropical, never below 65 degrees fahrenheit during the coolest months, if I plant fig trees, they would not get the required chill hours.

I have been doing some internet research, and I understand that if i can get fig tree varieties from a locality that has similar tropical weather, i.e. South Florida, I may have some chance of getting them to grow and fruit in the Philippines.

I would be interested in purchasing some cuttings to try.

Thanks,

George,

Welcome to the forum.  I see this is your first post!

You might want to look around on this forum.  There are several discussions about growing figs inside during the winter and whether they need chill hours.

Also do some research and see what varieties catch your fancy.  There are some very good figs that are easy to come by!

Welcome to the forum.

I'm sure after doing a little searching, you will find all the information  you need about growing figs in tropical climates, like the Philippines.  I did a brief search for figs growing in Hawaii, and many sites and varietal recommendations came up.  "Black Mission" is one variety mentioned that does well in the tropics.  I'm not too sure if "chill hours" is something that needs to be worried about.  Maybe the Dept. of Agriculture in the Philippines can give you some information.

Good luck with your new hobby, retirement, and search for the right figs for growing the Philippines.

The Philippines have several different micro climates, many depending on Latitude and altitude.  There are figs growing in the
Philippines but I would determine the altitude where you are going to grow and go from there.  The main issue will be the rains and humidity which will cause splitting, it will not be as bad at the higher altitudes.

Good luck

There are people growing figs in Indonesia, Malaysia, Hawaii and I believe Grand Turk all without problems (except if it rains during harvest).

Thank you so much to those of you that have responded.

I feel more hopeful now and more motivated to give it a try when I go there next month. I will try to root some cuttings, and hopefully be able to share the results sometime next year.

Best Regards,

George

Figs can indeed grow well in the Philippines! Here is the Brown Turkey I planted last July 2013 somewhere in South Davao, Philippines. It's time to plant figs here in the Philippines! Here's some pics of my Brown Turkey.

If I had land in the Ph, figs would not be one of my priorities.  Would be stocking with Marang, Lucuma, Pantins, Jackfruit, Pulasan, Mangosteen, the better atemoyas, sapodillas new Mangos like Fruit Punch (when available), Sweet Tart, Coconut Cream, Lemon Zest, oldies but goodies like Carrie, Dot, then abiu, grimal and coronata jaboticabas, cambuca...If I had the space, the biggies like chupa-chupa, durian, and pedalai.

Figs?  Collect a few of the recommended, and then be done with it.
