Any Super Tasting Dark Variants Better Than ... ?

Any dark variants out there that taste better than Genovese Nero, Maltese Falcon, Cddn, Blk Maderia, VdB that I should try ? I know little about Monserrat Pon's varieties.

Paul, have you tried all the ones mentioned?  If so how do you rate them.

that's a tough list to beat. Maltese Beauty? i head Maltese Beauty is like all of above rolled into one.

If Jon ever figures out what it was.
I remember a couple years ago when I visited him we tried one that fruited for the first time and it tasted like a peach.
It was the size of an RDB and looked like it as well.

I have mentioned this a few times in the past but he did not recall what it was. We should have taken notes right then and there. But who was to have known?

Violette solleis was pretty good last year

Rafed,
I was perusing through the varieties on figs4fun website today and saw B MAD 002, which Jon described as a likely offspring of black Madeira with peachy undertones, late ripening, might be the one you remember...

rafed, wasn't that something like BM002 or something? or was it BM006? i think there was recent post by jon on that one.. touch of peach and you mention that might be it.

Pete and Cajun,

There was a topic on BM002 a while ago. In that post I asked Jon could this be the same one we had and he confirmed that was not the one.

The one we had looked everything like an RDB, except the taste.

fig with taste of a peach would be definitely welcomed.

I thought I saw somewhere that Salce tastes like a peach. Not dark like RdB, but supposed to have the flavor. Perhaps Mario or Bill Saxon could confirm.

two Salce survived the winter. will repot as soon as they put on the figs.

Wish I had some of those fancy sounding figs.....LOL    I went to a local nursery to see what they had. They had Black Mission and Black Jack.
.....Well since the fruit was ripe I decided to try them out...the Black Jack tasted like Black Mission but not as sweet....It was funny if the owner
would of came up to me and said what are you doing harvesting out here....I would of said " Hey I am the customer and need to taste test"...LOL

@ ejp3 - With a little luck, I may be able to sample all of them this season. All aided with help of green house. Hence the interest in setting a benchmark & selectively maximizing growing space to saviour(ideally) the best. That's the thought for now.

The figs love the green house climate & they grow well. It is definately going to be my best season for main crop figs. I should be able to sample many variants that have never ripen or ripen with poor taste due to colder weather in Oct. A few variants like Takoma Violet, Smith, Moscatel Branca, St Rita etc have responded very well with good productivity. Hence fellow British Columbians who are interested in enjoying higher quality figs apart from Latarulla, Desert King & Osborne Prolific, it is advantageous to have a green house. My green house is currently packed with plants. All small new plants I received this season have done very well & have at least tripled in size. I will remove all these young plants by month end & bring in selected variants bearing main crop figs.

I shared my second ripe fig, a Violette de Bordeaux, with my grandkids and we all three remarked that it tasted like peach.

Paull22 have you tried Kathleen's Black? I haven't had every fig on that list -- yet. I like Gino's (Black) and it has really attractive leaves with a blue tint to them. Very unusual.
bcantor opened a thread about this recently that's still around.

I think I have sampled Kathleen Blk when it was young plant 4 to 5 years ago. Not impressed then but kept it as I keep hearing good things. It is a late ripener here and I have never bothered to sample late ripeners as they have tasted terrible.I still have KB and it is targetted to be re-located into the the green house soon. It is given a new lease of life for 2 yrs. If it is not as good as VdB in my zone, it will have to go to another home.

Gino taste is OK for now. I hope its taste improves. This season it has good productivity & grown in-ground. This is another variant with a short lease tenure here if taste does not improve in my zone.

I have to add that as I have more opportunities to trial other variants, I would weed out the less favourites & focus on the higher quality ones. I certainly have reliable & good producers to backup my selection.
