Anybody growing Ischia Green?

People say it is the same fig,because I Condit describe it as being the same fig,in Hilgardia.

After all I have seen the many error in I C book,I would side with J Verdick and say is different.
Only someone that have both from reliable sources can pinpoint the difference.
I have Green Ischia from UCD,and Bataglia green from Paradise N,which seem to be related but not the same.
Also in the past California collection had 2 accessions ,sepaRATED,ABOUT THESE CULTIVARS,AND ONE WAS GREEN iSCHIA AND THE OTHER WAS vERTE.

Edit:I finally have seen a difference between Green Ischia and White Ischia ,looking at pixes from fig4fun and pixes of green Ischia here.
That is:White Ischia has totally round fruits,
          :Green Ischia has positively, elongated fruits ,with a pronounced neck.
They are not the same cultivar!

Herman, does heat make them grow faster or just ripen quicker once they are grown? For example is this heat wave we have now making the figs already growing grow faster?

As I stated before,fruits ripe faster in high heat and drought,not that the tree grow faster.
Also when getting ripe faster because of the heat,it is not good for the fruits because they will be inferior in taste and flavor to what the tree can do best.

Thanks Herman.

So, a few names have been tossed around in this thread and posted at nursery websites and I think I need someone to untangle my brains....

* Verte
* Strawberry Verte
* Ischia Verte
* Green Ischia
* Ischia Green
* White Ischia
* Green Ischau
* Strawberry

I have a "Strawberry", which (according to Almost Eden) is the same as "Ischau", as you see here:

http://almostedenplants.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1008&bc=no

But Strawberry is supposedly NOT the same as Strawberry Verte, if I recall a previous thread on here correctly.

So, I guess my questions are ...

[?] Are all of the figs above the same?

[?] If not, can someone identify which are different?

[?] Also, if I have a 'Strawberry' and the source is Almost Eden, should I bother with Ischia Green?

Jason,

Ischia /White Ischia/ Singleton/ Brocket Hall is a different cultivar. Hope this helps. Here is what Condit and others say:

"Although trees were grown at the early California Experiment Stations, the varietyfailed to receive favorable attention on account of the small size of the fruit. In good weather the figs dry partly on the tree and drop with little spoilage; they are also good or homemade preserves and pickles.The tree has a dense habit of growth, with numerous small, short twigs; terminal buds are olive green in color. Leaves small, glossy above, mostly 3-lobed; upper sinuses shallow and narrow; base truncate, sometimes decurrent; margins crenate (plate 13). Description of figs is from specimens grown at Riverside.

Breba crop small or none; fruits below medium, spherical, with very short neck; stalk short and thick; eye rather large, open; color of skin green, tinged with violet; pulp light strawberry; quality poor.

Figs of second crop borne profusely; size small, averaging 18 grams in weight, up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter by 1-1/4 inches from base to apex; shape oblate to spherical, with or without short neck; stalk short and thick, or up to 1/2 inch long, sometimes swollen toward the apex; ribs narrow, prominent; eye medium, open, scales pink; surface dull, with faint bloom; white flecks scattered and inconspicuous, as shown by Condit (1941a, fig. 9, H); skin checking crisscross, discolored or blemished by circular brown spots at complete maturity; color green, flushed with violet; meat white, thin; pulp very light strawberry; flavor sweet; quality fair. (Plates 9; 15, D.)

Caprified specimens slightly larger and heavier; pulp deep strawberry; flavor somewhat acid."

Hi, all!

Apparently, my local tree does produce breba figs! Took these today. I'll check back in a cpl of weeks to see if they are ripe.

My little experience with Green Ischia is limited to rooting cuttings.

Without a doubt they are very easy to root and vigorous. I had 100% sucess with rooting and I believe they will all grow out. All are potted in one gallon pots now. Time will tell more.

Green Ischia has been a fruiting fool for me. The little one year old plant from a purloined cutting (Felcos and plastic bags wherever we go) always gave me one or two figs every day. The leaves look like the ones in Reuben's pictures with the flatter bases. If anybody wants email me as I have quite a number of them rooted now.

I have three Ischia Green trees in 3 gallon pots that I will probably put in the ground before June. Maybe,I will get a fig or 2 before the end of summer.The little trees are really looking good IMO.

Final update!

Checked on the breba on the 15th and they were still hard and green. Went again about an hour ago and they were ripe!!! Apparently, they had started ripening about 4 days ago from the looks of a couple of them. Dang birds had already discovered a bunch of them. They were very good! My favorite for flavor and sweetness are the more ripe/overripe ones. They definitely get better the riper/softer they are. The average weight was 36.8g with the largest being 47g.  I think the pictures tell the rest of the story. Between my wife and I, they lasted less than a minute!

Nice photos Ruben.

Thanks, Joe!

I now have lots of fruit on my tree which is in a pot.  It is extremely hot here.  In the 100's nearly everyday and the forecast is for more heat for at least the next couple months.   What can I do to make sure the fruit ripens.  I've been waiting months and the fruit is getting to a certain size, but stays hard.   I have it in Miracle Gro soil mixed with some perlite.  Repotted about 1 or 2 years ago.   Growth really exploded this year and lots more figs, but these figs have been sitting there for over 2 months and not ripening (some breba, but mostly main crop).

figfinatic,

What city/zone are you in? Is your tree forming breba or main crop? These are Verte/Ischia Green breba I just posted. The main crop normaly comes in in early July in my zone. Can you post a few pics of your tree? Thanks

Nice photos Ruben Those Brebas look great can't wait for the verte u sent to start producing its been babied and pampered and I hope it repays me with figs.

Thanks again Ruben

Nelson,

Glad it is doing well for you! His siblings have main crop fruit forming here. btw, the Bourjassotte Noire and Genovese cuttings both produced two viable plants each and they are tolerating Texas heat just fine. Thank you too!

No problem Ruben glad they both rooted for you I'm sure they will like their new home.

Reuben,

Thanks for the pics. One question and a display of my newbie ignorance.

How the heck did you know they were ripe?

By touch or the neck droop or ?????

I bought a fig tree on clearance that was only tagged Ischia.  Do you think it is probably an  Ischia Green?

I got it at the Walmart in Oakdale La.  It was reduced to $3.75 so I  went ahead and got it.  I also bought a nice Ruby Red grapefruit for $15.

@Charles,

Both droop and feel.

@Chapman,

Only the Ischia White should be known as just "Ischia" according to Condit. However, I doubt that is why they labeled it just Ischia. They probably did not know what/which they had. Good luck!

Chapman, earlier this year I purchased one from Walmart also. It was in one of those pots all printed up with pictures of figs and the name of the nursery I think, since I'm not looking at it but just using my weak memory. On the pot it said local fig, but there was a tag attached to the pot that had Ischia Green on it. Since I have a Ischia Black I thought it fitting to have the green also. It turns out that it also had a sprout growing from below the soil and when I pulled it from the pot to put it in a larger pot, I found that the sprout had roots also. I separated from the mother plant and now have two for the price of one. Both are doing fine.
"gene"

Ruben, thanks for the reply.  Gene, that's the same pot I bought with the pictures. My tree is looking pretty good. My pot also had a sticker saying Dewar Nurseries,Apopka FL.

Ruben here are two pics of the verte enjoying the sun.
