anybody have a shoehorn?

my trees survived Sandy so today was the day to put them away for the winter about 42 trees in sheetrock buckets 5 trees in 15 gallon containers and about 35 babies in 1 gallon containers all in the space of about 4 ft x 12 ft  not an easy task next year I have to build a separate fig house for them

I fully understand your dilemma. I am in Zone 5a and with growing number of trees. Some have to go into an uninsulated unheated garage requiring a space heater during period of mid-December (Or early sometimes) to mid-March or later. My concern is loss of power for any reason during these months when outside temperatures are between -15C (5F) to -20C (-4F) most of the time, and can dip to -30C (-22F), and occasionally to -35C (-30F) for short periods enough to kill the plant.

Ottawan,
Do you put your heater on a timer? Or does it have a thermostat?

Kubota
I would like to keep the garage temperature above -5C (23F) and below +7C (45F) during mid-Dec to mid-March and after that I will turn the heater on only if needed.  I don't have it on a timer or a thermostat that works at the intended temperature range. I do have a remote temp sensor to show the garage temperature in case adjustment is required during deep freeze weeks.

Yikes Dave, I just started this hobby.  You mean my addiction might grow to this???

Steve
Possibly, may be worse with 100 or more trees and wanting more new varieties !!

Nice, I don't feel alone jamming all my figs in the garage. I need more shelves...

looks like you could put a skinny shelf over those bigger buckets and put little ones on the skinny shelf.  Great looking sleeping figs.

omotm not might but definitely a couple of buddies of mine didn't know anything about figs after tasting one of my fresh figs they wanted a tree and they claimed they only had enough room for 1 tree in there garage  well 4 months later they each have 5 or 6 trees "and still looking for more" somehow these trees mysteriously multiply by themselves

71GTO they like being close together they live off each other's body heat

I'm down here in Connecticut that is an unheated shed and they do fantastic over the winter having lost one green tip yet "can't wait till Spring"

Is that some sort of a heat pump against the back wall (the copper tubing)?

i am new to fig growing ...have four trees that are in the ground ....about 2yrs old...had some die off last year because i covered them to early .... live in westchester county new york.. when should i cover them and any tips on what to use?

Pete,

If she didn't complain about how many trees you have, I'm pretty sure it means you can get more.

oh.. she's talking. but hasn't said no yet. she saw my new cuttings i'm rooting right now and said.. "why?". i said they are all different. like your shoes.

like shoes! That reminded me of when I helped my boss move out of his house. I could not believe how many shoes he had- all in their original boxes, Italian and everything else, shoes for everything, event, suit, weather, sport, city and he said it was a collection of 30+ years... many car loads of shoe boxes... Some of us like figs, others like shoes.

Dave,

I know I'm already in trouble.  Said to myself just a couple of planted trees and a couple in pots to keep this in control.  Well, now I'm measuring out the yard to see how many figs I can fit in.......

Hi Pete,
Is that a Plumeria in your pic.?

Here is my mess to far... That isn't even all of them yet. I still have some outside that won't drop thier leaves and a bunch not in the picture.

kubota1,

yes, they are plumeria. one 10 gal pot with two different kind. not sure what their names are. i had 4 different ones. but killed 2 of them during the first winter. i think i had them since 07. they truly smell like heaven.
