Anybody here that screens their perlite?

James,  that's a great idea, but better yet...
...I could buy a brand new tumble dryer.  I can replace the outer drum with mesh and turn it directly into a screening trommel!!!  And the best part of it is, as you point out, I GET TO KEEP THE BOX! ;-)
Jim

Man! We are all crazy for sure.

Excellent idea!  Boost the heat output and pop your own.

I water the soil, squeeze out most of the moisture and mixed the beads in. Thereafter I used this mix
as my potting mix. I placed my rooted cuttings in a humidity chamber. I used an aquarium as if it is a
green house with a heat mat at the bottom. I cover the top of the aquarium with plastic sheet or a
large garbage bag.

Pauly,
how long have you been doing this?
any negatives you have found?

That is beyond crazy. You got too much time on your hands to be screening perlite!

1st time using beans. No messing about with fine perlite dusts that are bad if inhaled. No need to wear mask and so far no
negatives. The beans are consistent in size(large). It is a bonus for drainage, increasing the odds for newly rooted cuttings survival.

Paully22,
I purchased a "bag of beans" after reading the topics posted by you and Grassa. I am currently testing the beans as a replacement for Perlite but there seems to be one problem with the foam beads. Its difficult to get them evenly distributed into the mix, they have a tendency to "float" to the top of the potting mix.
Have you been able to get an homogeneous mix?

Thus far, no problems encounter. I did observe as per your report when I was mixing it with top
soil on its flotation tendencies. Not a problem for me as I have rooted cuttings in 100% perlite. The
only issue I have with 100%perlite is that I need to up-pot sooner. With a little spaghnum moss
around the roots zone mixed into the soil, I do not need to water so much & in frequency. I can also
delay my up-potting till better weather comes on a stretch.

Great machine Wills!

I screen my perlite. I just cut a 3' piece off a roll of window screen and built a frame with 1"x2"s and another with 2"x2"s and sandwiched the screen between with glue and screws. I screen out in the street when there is a light breeze or walk backward or diagonally or whatever to keep it away from my face.  If nothing else I can hold my breath, it only takes about 30 seconds to screen an 8 Qt bag.
