I've about given up on my request for cuttings from UC Davis.  Are there any of you out there who have gotten confirmation emails but have not yet gotten cuttings?

I sent a note to them late last week (was getting concerned) and received a reply that they would be in the mail by the end of the week.

I got a shipping notice on Mar 27, which I thought meant the cuttings were either on their way or would be sent shortly. I checked the tracking number on the FedEx site again this morning and they haven't shipped yet. I'm still assuming they'll get here, but its a longer wait then I expected. I guess they're short-handed.

I just received notice that mine have shipped and that I should have received them last week.  They did not arrive as of yet, and with the warm weather, maybe they'll start rooting before they get here.  Weather here is a a lot  warmer than it should be for this time of year, almost all of my figs have broken dormancy.  The fun has just begun!

I got mine weeks ago.  However, I submitted my order the first day orders were accepted.

The package just arrived and it looks like everything that was ordered came.    This is very exciting.  Now to get them rooted!

The cuttings finally got here.  One cutting of Black Madeira, three cuttings of Giant Amber.  I had also ordered an Adriatic but there was a note saying "the plant was too small to provide cuttings".  The Giant Amber cuttings were long enough that I cut them in half.

I also got cuttings from the original "Tennessee Mountain Fig", the one in Oak Ridge, Tennessee that is pictured on the internet.  These came courtesy of a friend and are now resting in Sphagnum moss along with the UCDavis cuttings.

Dang it, I also popped my knee yesterday afternoon and am in a brace from ankle to groin.  Will not know if I need surgery until Tuesday.

Ox, I feel your pain.

I provide local computer assistance in my neighborhood free of charge - everything from tearing down and repairing laptops to malware removal and cleanup.  There are some folks that live around the corner experiencing hard times.  Both out of work - wife carries out a side business on eBay to pay the bills, but has no spare money.  Their kid is epileptic and has seizures...was carrying their laptop, dropped it on a hard floor, smashing the screen and killing it from booting up.  In the process of repairing the laptop, I had to walk outside, went down a steep set of stairs, and managed to twist my ankle and fracture a bone in my ankle, while spraining the other ankle.

I'm sure I could probably use a visit to the doc, but ... I'm too stubborn.  I've had worse.  I've been in my Swede brace, and that seems to be helping a lot.

This is the Adriatic tree at Davis, and had no available cuttings either of the two summer I was there. Ordering it will probably be fruitless until it is repropagated at Davis, and grows to a size that will yield cuttings, probably in the new fig block that is being prepared.

Jason;
LOL; a couple of old coots in trouble.  How do we manage to do such things?   All I did was crawl around on the ground planting blueberries.  When I started to get up the old knee just gave up.

I can imagine how those ankles feel.  I went to the Dr. hoping that I did not have to have surgery.  He offered me pain pills but I told him I'd tough it out.  By about three AM I was thinking perhaps I'd made the wrong decision.  I hope your ankles are no worse.

As for the Adriatic, that UC Davis tree looks sort of spindly.  If it was planted at the same time as those others in the background I'd say it needed replacing.  Probably best that we did not get cuttings.

Sun is out bright and shining, the forecast out to the l7th is good and April 20th is supposed to be frostproof.  I think we have it made in my part of OK.  I'm ready.

This is what USDA / UC Davis sends.

I stuck mine in the frig for a little longer. I have too many other cuttings that I am rooting, currently. (Life is tough.) Spent the whole day potting newly rooted cuttings and re-potting small plants into larger pots today. Love it!!

Still nothing, despite a Mar 27 email projecting Mar 29 as a ship date. And, no responses yet to a couple of email inquiries. Anybody else still waiting?

I'm still waiting too but have resigned myself to not getting my request filled. Didn't get mine last year either. I'm more disappointed in missing out on the grapes than the figs...is that blasphemy? ;-) That's OK, I have my hands full at the moment.

Here are the cuttings I received:

3 Barnisotte

1 VDB

1 Black Madeira

It's exciting to have these new figs. If you're still waiting for your cuttings don't give up yet.

I received an email response from UCD yesterday saying my order info had been entered into the Fedex website prematurely, and that it still needs an inspection before it can be shipped. So, despite delays caused by illness and other factors it sounds like things are still on track. They hope to ship it sometime next week. Christmas in April!

Well, considering the price, I guess I can't complain. As long as they get here eventually and are in decent shape, I'll be a very happy camper, and at that point the extra wait time won't matter.

Well, Friends:
I have the cuttings from UC Davis in the peat moss.  Considering the luck I had with the earlier cuttings in Sphagnum moss I am expecting great things.  I also have been given cuttings from the original "Tennessee Mountain Fig" growing in Oak Ridge, Tenn.  Nothing says this is truly the "original" but it is the one pictured on the net.

Thanks, Buddy; I expect wonderful trees from these cuttings.

It's just wild to me that cuttings are going out still.

Out of the 20 or so cuttings (7 varieties?) I received ~5 weeks ago, I sent about quarter of them out to other fig friends on the forum, all but two varieties (Excel and Vernino) are fully rooted and about to be transferred into pots.  It's wild to think that some folks are just getting started when I feel like I'm just wrapping up!!

Well, even if Christmas is over for you, I'm still looking forward to the fun! I'm quite excited to move beyond the few varieties I have and try some new ones--and hopefully I'll have similar good luck with getting them to root. If I'm successful and end up with multiples of the same varieties, I'll see if I can get some friends and neighbors enthused about finding room for the excess plants. It would be nice to have a few more fig enthusiasts in Tucson!

I did order late Nov so they probably pack and ship in the order received? I did order a caprifig (Q) this go-around.

I don't think they fill the orders in the order that they are received. I noticed that at least one forum member who reported ordering in late November or early December received theirs in the middle of March. I ordered mine in early September and received mine the last day of March.

It looks like Ken, ordering in  October still hasn't got his yet either.

I wonder how they do decide the sequence of filling orders?

That said, it certainly is a great resource for all of us and I am very thankful. I plan to breed figs to get more cold tolerant early ripening varieties, so having now received several of the persistent caprifigs that Condit used in his breeding, I will try crossing them with some early ripening/cold hardy varieties. This year if I get some caprifigs with pollen!

Sue:
I did get the "Capri Q" which they appear to have renamed "Orosi Green". The cuttings are doing well so far, so if you don't get any, let me know and I likely can spare one.

Maybe they go alphabetically, or they prioritize based on what you put in the "usage" field (or whatever - the "what is the purpose for you requesting these cuttings" section of the order form)

I wonder if the renaming of Capri Q as Orosi Greenis an admission that it is not a caprifig? I don't see any info on their site that gives any hint.

OK so that theory of filling the order in sequence is shot. ;-)

Thanks for the offer Tom. If I don't get a Capri Q, I'll take you up on one.

I suspect that they fill orders as they accumulate the cuttings desired.  It would not make sense to trim trees in the order cuttings were requested.  More likely than not they distribute cuttings to bags as they prune, then ship them as the orders are completed.  If they run out of cuttings before your bag is full you don't get that fig.  If one of your requests is the last tree pruned you will be getting a late shipment.

Ox,

The only problem with that is that they would have had to have take the cuttings back in January, or early February. By now they have long since broken dormancy, esp, this season.

Well, the doorbell just rang and it was Santa in his Fedex uniform, with a nice bundle of sticks (no coal)--everything except adriatic! Here's hoping the rest of you get the same welcome surprise!

Sue--glad to hear yours arrived in good order, and assume Jackster got his too. Hopefully that's everybody.

As I checked mine over in detail, I saw that Adriatic, which I thought hadn't been shipped, was included as well (they didn't identify it by name, just by number, so I overlooked it at first), so that's everything on my wish list. What a great service! I think it's wonderful that they will provide this material just for the asking (and shipping cost).

Mine arrived this morning.  Out of my eclectic order, only one was not available - DFIC0079 San Pietro.  Well worth the wait, even though I have to admit I was having doubts.
