Anyone buy from Floridahillnurserycom or wellspring?

Yes, the little trees from Florida Hill Nursery are years away from bearing age.  I never expected that the trees would be anything but tiny, seedling-size.  The description clearly states the sizes....8"-12"...very small trees.

No harm, no foul.  I got what I paid for.

Frank

Totally agree.  They were $7. I was happy with what I got.  I've got time and patience.

Here is my Green Ischia from Wellspring.  Planted on 6-1-12  6 wks later in a 20" pot.    It does show some signs of FMV.   One of my fastest growing varieties.

Got this Marseilles White from another Ebay seller.   The plant started out very small and has grown like a weed.  I pinched the tip and left only 2 lower figs. I know I'm not supposed to keep figs on such a young fig tree, but I don't care.  I love the leaves on this thing.

This is backwards to post the June 1 planting, but here it is 6 wks ago.

I wish to buy one from Wellspring, not Floridahill. I'm spending extra effort to save this small fig tree. Its two leaves were burn when I received it, and it got worse under only morning sun.

That is not an Italian Honey Dan. Very interesting though...

Dan,

Your Blanche/Marseillaise White is not true. Your Verte/Ischia Green is suspect. Looks like it will be predominatly 5-lobed with auricled basal lobes. That does not describe a Verte. Perhaps when it gets a few years older. Hopefully they are something tasty.  Good luck!

Thanks to all.  I love a good mystery!  I will keep posting photos later on.

OK, I'm no longer enjoying the mystery.  It's been eating at me all weekend.  Anyone have an idea on what kind of fig the one with long lobes on it is.   I'm amazed how fast it's growing.  There are not very many places you can go to have your figs identified by just leaf shape.  I will post images of the fruit when they ripen, but if anybody has any ideas right now I'm open to hearing suggestions.

thanks

Dan is this dark or green(yellow) fig

It's green now;).    I will try to remain patient until the fruit ripens.

Here we are now at the end of September.   The two figs are still green at the bottom of the trunk.   In Post 30, you will see what this fig looked like at the beginning of June.   This fig grew the most out of all my figs.  It grew like a weed.   I had to pull the pot out of the ground because of Frost warnings.   Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I wish I could tell you it was a green or brown fig, but it doesn't look like I will find out.

I don't know what it is , but the leaves are great !

I posted this on the other thread as well ....

I hate to say this mostly as I am new and don't want to start flames but I think you need a warning.

I would not trust that I would get the variety I actually bought from Florida Hill.  Between the owner going on websites and vouching for his own business while pretending he is simply another hobbyist until he got busted.   Or from the fact he sends out mislabeled plants in the past to such a degree that I don't think it was an accident.     I don't trust the business and would not order from them....that is my personal opinion.

WillsC,

I have heard the same story many times concerning Florida Hill. Some people are reporting FMV on these tissue cultured plants as well. This makes me wonder if FH is actually selling tissue cultured plants or not.

SEGeo,

I just don't trust FloridaHill......if anyone wonders why here are the reasons.

In the Gardenweb thread I am Bamboo_Rabbit btw.  I know for a fact he sold mislabeled plants on several occasions, both bananas and blueberries.  The part that really made me go hmmm.....is the sweetcrisp blueberry one of the hottest varieties going right now he had them in stock when everyone else was sold out.  Then a year later all the people that bought them over the coarse of months find out they got hosed and did not get sweetcrisps.  Not only that the people didn't even get the same variety of mistakes which really makes one stop and wonder.  FloridaHill did send new plants to the people but it is too early to know if the new plants are correct.

There is another post titled LSU Purple cuttings I think that is also discussing these companies.

After growing mine out a season, one Ischia and one Magnolia, I sent pictures back to Florida Hill,  suggesting they were mislabeled and both the same cultivar. Florida Hill folks agreed with me and offered to credit my next purchase.

I bought several banana plants and a hardy orchid from Floridahill spring of 2011. The plants were all small but looked healthy and I was happy with them. A couple of months later the orchid bloomed and althought very nice it was not the color that I had ordered - pale green instead of pink. I emailed them half a dozen times but they never responded at all. It was an $8 plant so I just let it go but I will never order from them again. My bananas have all done very well but who knows what they are?

When I am considering ordering from online nurseries I am not familiar with, I check out the GardenWatchdog site.  They have reviews on over 7500 nurseries, and have saved me from making a number of mistakes in the past.  Here is what they have to say about the two nurseries being discussed in this thread:

Florida Hill Nursery - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/7888/

Wellspring Gardens - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3735/

Yes. I am aware of it, too. I ordered but It looks not what I ordered. Let's see what it grows and looks like next years. It is too small to tell whether it is right kind or not.

Dan, I have an unknown variety that looks exactly like that and it produces a white fig. All green skin. Very delicious. One of my favorite trees.

I've purchased many plants from Wellspring. The prices are very cheap compared to others. Also, their shipping price is very reasonable. I got 12 banana plants, 15 or so different indoor plants, and about 6 fruit trees from them this past year. They are all really small but did very well. Some of the banana trees are already over 8-10 foot tall.

got some plants from them. nice price and shipping. Happiest of Pimenta dioica / Allspice. Got LSU Purple and Ischia. They are small and slow growing. but leaves look healthy. Probably a cutting is a lot faster. If you can cope with the figs being small it is fine.
