I found this sprouter at the Goodwill. It was missing a few parts which I ordered. Now that it's functional the idea came to me that it might make a really good fig cutting sprouter as well. It automatically waters the trays every 15 minutes. I think I'll give it a try with some Chicago Hardy cuttings. Here's a short video that shows how it works.

These are great for wheat grass, although wheat grass is pretty easy with just a tray of water.

But I think they would be too wet for figs.  I think they would rot.  That's just my guess, there's only one way to find out!

There seems to be a lot of problems with mold in this machine... I found a lot of reviews on Amazon. I got excited when I saw your post I grow a lot of sprouts and micro-greens and thought it would be great but after a few 1 star reviews....

long time ago back in korea, my mother tried to grow bean sprout in something similar but more manual system. later, i found a way to grow alfalfa sprouts in a ziploc bag while hiking. 

just one question.. what does "milehighgirl" mean? does it mean you are a flight attendant? i know stewardess is less politically correct term now days.

Yes, I'm in Denver. When a plane lands in Denver it is still a mile high, kinda weird.

I hope to get the sprouter set up and see what happens. I think Greg is right, sprouts can be grown in a matter of days, but figs take longer which would lead to more mold. I wonder how much antifungal I can put in it and still not kill the cutting? I had good success sprouting in green moss last year so maybe I'll just do that and have me some sprouts instead.

Well I used my sprouter to sprout some mung and sunflower seeds and it was amazingly simple. So, just to see what happened, I put 3 cuttings of Unk Dark from Grasa in the sprouter along with some more seeds. It has been less than a week and they are getting initials now. I did have to remove portions of two or the cuttings but I have read that it is common for the section above the top node to die, so I wasn't too worried. I cut this portion off of two cuttings because it did turn brown and soft. Today, a week later, and I have initials. I have put grapefruit seed extract, aspirin, and folic acid in the water but I am also thinking that it may be that the sprouts are putting out rooting hormones also. 

I don't know how quickly this particular variety roots, but a week is pretty quick, I think. I will keep posting.

  I love experiments.  There's always something new to learn. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  I'll be waiting to hear how it turns out.
