anyone grown osborne prolific

the figs4fun variety database says an osborne prolific is brown, and is also the same as an archipel. then it says the archipel is green. are they the same fig?

I grow both from UCD sourced material.  Grown in pots in my climate with my potting mix and the way I fertilize they appear to be different figs.  Both are very good.  Both are brown most years.

Osborn Prolific is described as both brown and purple. Mine is purple. Don't know if it is the real deal or not. See also Brown Turkey HD, which might in fact be an Orborn Prolific (we know it isn't a BT). Welcome to the fun part of figs.

In the February 1955 Hilgardia "Fig Varieties: A Monograph" (downloadable PDF available on my website), Ira Condit listed both "Archipel" & "Rust" as being called "Osborn Prolific" or "Osborn's Prolific".  Per his descriptions of the two varieties, both are dark skinned figs.  Attached is the composite pic of a "Neveralla" aka "Archipel" Breba from my website.  The whole fig and the whiter sliced figs weren't fully ripe.  Hope the pic helps!  I now have similar pics of 16 varieties posted on my website http://sites.google.com/site/kiwifruitsalad2

Here's my Osborn Prolific

I don't know if you found my post with the attached, maybe it will help you decide different or same.

My young Osborn Prolific shows more of a Brunswick like leaf has not fruited yet.

Bass what was the leaf shape on yours

Thanks StevenNJ. Thats good info. I have an Osborn & true to the description of fruit colour. Now I have the peace of mind to add either Neverella or Archipel to my collection when I am ready.

Glad it was useful Paully. I have a Neveralla and an Archipel in their first season that I will be studying and comparing. I had some Osborn cuttings but they didn't survive. I might add one next year.

Have an osborne in its 5th year.  This is the first year with fruit.  Total of 2 fruits.  This one is getting close to throwing away.     Y

Bump.

I'm bumping up this thread for more information.  You don't see a lot of comments about this fig.  At least I don't.  :)

Hey Jon, did you tree ever produce brown or green figs?

KiwiBob, do you have anymore data on this fig since your original observation?

Bass, Do you still have your tree?  Is it in a pot or in the ground?  How does the figs taste?

Sal, where are you buddy?  Haven't heard from you in a while.  How's your tree today?

Hey Ed, did you keep your tree?  Did it ever fruit for you?

The reason I ask these questions is I got one and it's pretty big.  I'm hoping for a lot of figs this year.  I got another tree that I think might be the same.  time will tell!

Cheers!

I have a few rooted in gal pots i am going to plant out in spring, got the cuttings from a forum member. hope they are good when i get them.
