Anyone guys know this variety from france

Whatever it is ....it looks Delish.

Violette de Sollies

Violette de Sollies it is Violette of Sollies
,or other veriety?

Hi y626033,
The dark one is Bourjassotte noire = violette de solies at least that is what the speaking lady says ...
The one harvesting says that they are unifera and the tree goes fully productive after 7 years.
The small green/grey one in the shop is a wild unknown they say .
In Sollies, they have a "name protection" for the fig sold as "la figue de Sollies" - So Violette de Sollies (French) is Violette of Sollies  (English) .
It is a shame that they don't show the price.
In which continent are you ?

Ah Violet de Sollies , here picture from our backyard weeping.

WOW, those are some beautiful  figs!

Great looking figs Martin. If all goes well I will have some cuttings this year from a friend. You've got me wanting them bad.
Thanks for the picture.

I need to make one of those fig limb gaffs haha.

wow, lovely place to be
BTW, that gray type reminds me of Barnisotte Grise', they are more suited to cooler parts of Mediterranean.

What's your opinion of the taste of those beautiful figs?

thank you for sharing!

This rather old variety apparently originates somewhere in North Africa, later brought to Iberia and grown extensively in the region of Burjassot (Valencia/Spain) from where it got its popular name of Burjassot Negro. It was then taken to many world places, baptized, patented (?) etc.. as it always happen with the best ones!

An easy rooter, develops into quite large trees and if you happen to have long hot Summers, temperate not too wet Autumns, you easily eat its figs through December

The attached picture shows the jelly pulp of a 'Braçajote Preto' grown in pot on my balcony near the sea. Of course, I have  asked a neighboring Caprifig to give it a hand !
Our Californian forum members could easily try on their 'Violette de Solliès' .

Francisco,

Thanks for your superb comment and a nice photo!
I started a VdS a few months ago and if everything goes right, I may have a fig to taste next year.

How many years it takes until the tree produces the high quality figs? I've seen some comments here about 7 years or so.
Does it really takes this long?

Hi Greenfig,

Thanks. This particular variety if you do it right, grows very rapidly . Likes to be fertilized at the correct timing.

In some cases have done it straight to the ground always with success.. first season, all priority goes to let it build a strong root system and to create a robust body... ( willow tea dilution, and rabbit manure, fish/bone meal..in light doses ).

During the first and second seasons, pinch all fig-lets ..(Courage!)  - otherwise your fig will not grow

Near its third Spring, make sure you feed your plant with a good organic fertilizer and supplement later with a standard granular, rich in 'P' and 'K'.

That season, its 3rd year, you may taste a couple of figs of large size  (around 80 grams).
For the connoisseur the very best fruit will come around the 4th..5th year...on
Never irrigate excessively. Mulching shall be mandatory

And, if you are in wasp country,That  would be ideal.

The mention of 7 years, probably takes into account commercial considerations

Good luck
Francisco

Hi,
Just two corrections to the articles:
Figs have not been cultivated in Sollies for centuries. They were producing apricots and cherries until middle/end of last century - of course they produce what they can sell the better. Because the price of apricots and cherries dropped some are now doing figs.
In the second article, I wish they were saying the truth - There aren't figs everywhere in France - Here, I have never seen a Sollies fig sold . They supply only the local markets.
The only "fresh" figs I saw, where too dry and unfreshed for me to give them a try.
A friend bought some, and inside they were already spoiled ( brownish ) and on the dry side. Those figs were from Turkey ( The land not the bird ) .
So if you come to France, do not expect to find figs everywhere . That's something that got me puzzled - While in vacation in July, in "les cevennes" so not so far from the "Var / Sollies", I asked for figs at a local marked, and the answer was straight : "come back in September, if you want to have a chance to find some " . Ok, the guy was selling apricots :°°( .

here is mine
