Anyone heard of Columbre?

Has anyone here ever heard of a fig called Columbre?  (That'd be plural, so maybe Columbro or Columbra, or other close spellings e.g. Columbri or Colombre)?  I was just talking with my dad about figs, on our Fathers Day call.  He mentioned that back in Italy some people had one that they called Columbre... though it may have been translated to English in a variety of ways  (even e.g. Columbard).  Anyone here ever heard of a fig variety with this (or similar) name?

There is Columbaro Bianco.

Thanks Rafed.  I appreciate the reference.  I had looked in the "Varieties" section of this site and a google search, but didn't find anything close.  Seeing the spelling you provided helped... finding lots of info now, about Columbaro Bianco, Columbaro Nero, Columbara Puglia, Columbara viola, and a few others.  Thanks!

I wonder what these are like.  The Bianco and Nero are both described as large, which is what my dad also said.  He said he used to eat these in Calabria, Italy.  But that was 1929 (left when he was 5 or 6), so I was impressed with his memory of the fig variety.  Do you have any of this variety?

Mike, Sometimes the name colummo or variations of the word depending on the dialect is used when referring to breba fig or fiorone. That being said I have heard of the names Colummo Bianco or Colummo Nero being used in conversation.    Angelo Zone 7a NY

Another Calabrian fig!!

When will it ever stop.

Angelo,

I believe that the word "ficazzana" is also used when referring to brebas. The word literally translates to "large fig". Correct me if I am wrong.

I have columbaro Nero from Calabria. Seems very similar to sals corleone.

Frank, you are correct. Ficazzana is yet another way to mention breba figs. Fiorone in Italy are something special not just for their size ,but there they actually taste very good because of climate and caprification.                                   Angelo  Zone 7a NY

Frank,

How about Calabrese ____? Fill in the blank, I think long, red etc etc.

Edit: It is Calabrese Long

Here you go Frank,

Columbaro Bianco
