Was just at Home Depot and spotted these SIPs. Curious if anyone has used them. I saw two sizes.

  As with all self watering pots, the key feature for it working properly is the potting mix. You can make self watering mini greenhouses from 2 liter coke bottles. A self watering pot can be made nearly from any existing pot. If you like the SIPS at home depot. I would say use the right mix and enjoy.

I've been using them this winter for my rooted cuttings. They work well, but if using them inside you have to water from the top as the bottom opening is too small. The figs have outgrown them pretty quickly though and I find myself having to water multiple times a week.

it makes my soil way too wet.. I have to monitor a lot... looks dry on top, but is sogging... danger for us here in the Seattle area.. you cannot let them get rained on.. or you will drown the plants as water sticks to water and it is too much for figs.... maybe better for our blueberries.

What's the best way to tell if your potting mix is well suited for a SIP? I'm currently using Gardner & Bloome Potting Mix and I add a little extra perlite.

Grasa, just cover your pot with black plastic, then move the plastic aside to water. All SIPs have the problem you are talking about. Also, a bit more perlite stops the soil from getting soggy.
