Not all of the green things are brebas, some are new leaves coming out. Leave them until you can tell the difference. Remove the brebas if these are recently rooted cuttings as they will kill the plant. If they are a few years old you can leave them all. If only 1 year old you can leave at least 1 unless the tree stops growing, then remove them.

Thank you so much :o). The tree is 1-2 years old , it came as a bare root, the root system looks substantial and healthy, so I'll do as you suggest, and see what pops out in time.

I'd leave all the brebas but fertilize. How tall is the tree and how wide is the pot?

The tree is 32 inches, the pot is 16 inches wide, 12 inches tall. I thought it was too soon after planting to fertilize, but if you say it's all good then I'll do it.

A good pot to start with. First water it with plain water then use something like Miracle grow 15-30-15 or a cheaper, similar thing. Look at the directions. Usually there's a scoop with a 2 sided spoon. The small one is for houseplants. Sometimes you put the small one in a gallon or sometimes 1 1/2 gallon. Then water the plant again with the fertilizer. After that I put some Osmocote 14-14-14 on the soil surface once per month with the last application in late June. The Osmocote says it lasts 3-4 months but my experience is that it only lasts 1 month. That's how I do it, other do things differently and it works for them :)

Cheers!!! rcantor, I really appreciate your responses, It makes me feel more confident that I'm doing the right thing by this figgy. It's going to be mild here today so I'm going outside to do more yard work in preparation for the season in about an hour. Firstly, I will attend to the fig tree and do exactly as you said, I have all the supplies ready :o). I also got 2 suckers from my hubby's aunts fig tree ( variety unknown ) yesterday, plus a few cuttings, so i'm going to try planting the suckers directly into the garden soil, with some soil ammendments to improve drainage. I live 2 blocks from the beach, so we have sandy soil as it is, which helps a lot. Hubby's aunt has had her fig tree for many years, she took cuttings from the original tree she had up in north Jersey and started a new tree here 19 years ago. She stopped covering it in the winter some years back too, and it does just fine, survived hurricane Sandy and produces delicious figs every year. :o)

Sue, you're right near a whole bunch of experienced fig growers from this forum. There's an annual get together near you, too. You might want to visit Bill's Figs and Trees of Joy which are near you and have great varieties for sale.

Bob......Yes. I already have their links saved to my fig fav's. It's been years since I've been to Flemington, It would be a nice springtime trip. Thanks for your input again. :o)
