Armenian Fig

Picked my second fig from this variety today. The first fig was picked 8/18 and was big (3.5" by 2.6") sweet but mild in flavor. It took 101 days for this fig to mature. The second one picked today was smaller but sweeter and took 112 days to mature.

Steve
nice to hear from you it seems like its been a while.
You always take nice pictures and thanks for shareing that 1 with us.
Maybe more pictures of ripe ones in near future?

Hi Stranger

Lookin good
Thanks for posting the beautiful pictures.

Thanks guys, I've been on a lot of personal and business travel over the past 2 months so haven't been around much. I hope to have a ripe "Martin Unknown" in another day or two ... it's a big one and I'll post some pics. The spring killed me this year (cold and wet) so most figs started forming in mid July. Many will never ripen this year. But a few plants got an early start and are starting to ripen now.

I'm sad to say I think my Martins unknown has passed away!

My B Marseilles VS has dropped its leafs too, all but two!

Could be a number of things that caused its demise
too darn hot, to darn dry, even though I watered it well!

and then lastly maybe it didn't like my alkaline soil

everything I have now are going to stay in pots until I can figure out what the problem is, the biggest problem may be me.

Other than what i have in pots and what I have coming I'm not going to try to replace any until I prove to myself that I can grow figs on this land.

Sorry to hear that Cecil. My Unknowns are like weeds. One is over 8ft tall and well branched out. I have tip pruned it twice this season but can't seem to get it to slow down! I'll have plenty of wood this fall. Remind me and I'll send you some.

Thanks Steve,

I'll keep that in mind.

cecil i'd take some soil in and have in analyzed. you may also want your water tested, if you've got well water. i'd bet your county ag agent can do that for a few bucks (at least mine can). if you're watering and fertilizing and mulching and weeding and you've got sun, they should take off for the sky. sorry to hear you're having these troubles.

Thanks Mike,

We have already went to our County ext. agent and got the little sack for the soil and the form.We will take a soil sample in Oct.

Now to our water, we have community water here, my older fig trees seem to like it.
And yes, I'm watering, fert, and mulching, in other words doing everything but getting young fig plants to survive.

Again, Thanks

Cecil,
ok then i'll promise to talk to the fig gods as im eating my next fig its the perfect time for the conversation and mention you in Texas and have then give ya good karma for growing figs.  ; )
Steve please im most anxious to see the unknown fig how it does in your area and also how it taste for you either good or bad. For your the first report from a lot of people that now have this plant.
Thanks in advance.
Cecil next season you will see how your thumb turns nice and green along with your fig plants!

Thanks Martin,

Only green thing around here is my envy of all that are eating

them beautiful figs!

I can always say "next year" But I'm getting a little long in the tooth for many more of them next years! But it keeps me going.

Martin, I'm sending you something in email that I have in common with my fellow Texan Willie Nelson!

Steve ate a bunch more figs today YUM!!!

Cecil,
gpsh did not know unknown Martin died.
Yaq should have told me, now i also can send you some scion say late winter for ealry spring propagation if ya like just give me a holler.
Hey how about a dark Portuguese baby plant?  Don't say you have enough with this rough year you had i resepectfully await your reply.
Man just got done sharing some figs with the neighbor next door as his 3 year old sals was kaput this spring and i grew a VdB for him off parent tree and now its 2 ft tall with figs which wont ripen of course .

Thanks for the nice gesture Martin

Let me see what SFA says about my soil test.

Again, Thanks

Aw there ya go Cecil,
put it in a POT and what dad used to say about things not to worry , hold on bringing out my chicago accent.

" Hey Fogett about it"

ok i wait.

Martin,

I held off picking the one from your Unknown until tomorrow ... it's dripping syrup. Looks great and will be a nice treat tomorrow.

Steve, How old is your unknown Martin plant & how many fruits ? Enjoy.

Paully,

I rooted two plants over the winter so this is their first season. Only one has 2 figs on it. By the way they grew, next year they should produce really well.

Regards

Thanks for the feedback Steven.
