Armenian fig with pics

This young tree has completely surprised me.  I got it from SteveNJ this past Spring.  It is only 24" high but it pushed out 27 figlets (before I started removing the new ones).

In an earlier post, Steve noted that it took 90-100 days for the first 2 to ripen.  This one surprised me by ripening a fig before any of my other varieties.  I picked the first Armenian on August 30 and picked 2 more today.

The pics below are the 2 that I picked today along with my first Sal's-Gene's
strain, also picked today.

The skin is extremely fragile and is easily damaged by any kind of abrasion.  After  I cut it open, I expected it to be sort of crunchy because of the size of the seeds, but it actually had an almost custard-like consistency.  The bit just below the stem had absolutely no flavor, but the rest was delicate and sweet.

The only reason I can imagine that it produced so many figs for such a young plant is possibly because Steve overwintered it in a sunny window inside his house, so it had a headstart this Spring.

Does the skin get a lot of dark spots all over the place while the fruit hangs on the tree?  How was the taste compared to sals?  Great to see you are getting ripe figs up where you are.

Hi, Ed.

Yes, the first fig that I picked on Aug. 30 had nots of brown markings and was uuuuugly as you can see below.  But then all of my figs seem to have a pattern of producing a single, unattractive fig a couple of weeks before they produce REAL figs.

Since it got cool quickly, I decided to try Herman's clear plastic bag trick to generate a little more heat during the day.  I think it worked.  The next 2 figs swelled and ripened in less than 2 weeks.  Maybe just a coincidence, but I don't think so.

Taste:  Lovely.  I had never had a white fig that I honestly liked.  I am rethinking that notion.   Both the overall texture and flavor are delicate.  It is sweet, but not dramatically so. The texture is divine, with almost no crunch at all   It is nothing like the Sal's (which was yummy).

Yes, the fig Gods smiled on me this year.  All of my trees are very young so I am only getting onsies and twosies each day and they are all pretty late (except for the Armenian), but that's a heck of a lot better than I was doing this time last year.

I believe you have Armenian also.  How has it done for you????

Good Observation Cynthia:I also noticed that first fruits are allwayes imperfect and much uglyer than what the cultivar can produce later in life and most of the time same year later in the season.
