James (of Austin fame) gave me this tree last year at Danny's Fig Gig in Marshall.  It was looking very sad at the time, but it made a big comeback this year after I up potted it this spring to a 3 gallon nursery pot.  I'd guess there are 9 more figs on this tree and am looking forward to them.

Slightly sweet, slight seed crunch, slight melon flavor (?), thin skin, delicate texture, good resistance to rain, tight-small eye and the birds don't touch them (so far).

Looks good, I've had a few atreanos from a young tree. I think your description is spot on for what I've experienced. You need to watch them close, if you get a ripe one during a week of unusually low humidity for the south, the flavor is dynomite! Just mouth watering, I've had two such specimens...We met at lsu fig day and you gave me a conadria cutting. I wanted to tell you it is alive and well, but is a runt as it nearly died on me last year. I don't think ill get a fig off of it this year , but I'm sure it will make some next year, and I'm really looking forward to tasting that one. I grew "Atreano"-Belleclare for 9 years...until it was killed by the freezing "Winter of '13-'14".  It's a great fig.  Water only enough to prevent wilting leaves, as the tree starts ripening figs.  Figs can be very large. Pick the figs when they are dead-ripe, turn a golden, banana-yellow, and start to shrivel slightly.  Flavor of these figs should be intense and sweet.  If not....it got too much water/rain.  Give this tree root room...it's very vigorous, and you'll get dozens of figs off this variety, that was bred for production.

Steve, are these brebas or main crop?  I probably won't get main crop until late August from my container tree.  However, I have one breba that started drooping a couple of weeks ago so I put an organzo bag on it (birds a relentless here and I'm sure they would go after a green fig).  However, after 2 weeks it still is not soft so I'll have to be patient.

Frank, the offer of giving you an airlayer off of my Atreano still stands if you are interested.  It was grown from a cutting I got from you.

I had an Atreano that I rooted last year and it fruited last year -- delicious! But it died over the winter. Luckily for me, I got a replacement at Bass's fig party, courtesy of Ricci. I'm going to really baby it. Thanks for the Atreano report.

I very much appreciate the standing offer.  I hope you are enjoying your "Atreano" as much as I have enjoyed the original tree from which your tree came from.  After my "Big Kill", I have greatly reduced the amount of fig trees that I will be growing.  My shed is far too small for a large collection.  Besides, I have replaced some of my old trees with new varieties.  I'm hoping my little "Olympian" will become my new "Atreano".  "Atreano" is a hard act to follow.

If grown right Atreano is a good "work-horse" fig, and will provide the lucky growers with plenty of very large, golden, figs.  I remember that there were a few years when the tree was so loaded with figs that I had to reduce the number of leaves, so that the sun could get to the ripening figs. The key is to meagerly water the tree as the figs begin to ripen and turn golden.  Prevent soaking rains from getting to the roots at this important stage, even if you have to shield the containers to deflect the rain water.

Cal - don't hold out much hope for those Conadria I gave you.  I think mine isn't the good strain.  Could barely eat mine last year.  I just threw one away last night that was rotting on the tree.  My tree is loaded this year but if the taste is bad.......its going to the chipper!

Steve - this fig was main crop.

Steve, Did you get the Mittica to root? I'm looking forward to some comparisons.
