Atreano

Like most figs, the riper the tastier. Atreano is no exception. To get figs to this perfect stage requires protection from birds and other critters. The right upper Atreano in the colander full of Celestes reached perfection.

Frankie, from the South..........

I see some green left on the skin....computer-color, or, were the figs full, yellow-gold?  My  "Atreano" figs go a banana-yellow when fully ripe. Also, are you growing them in ground?  If yes, how did you control water at the roots as figs started ripening?

Just curious.

Frank, from the North

Very Nice Frank!

As always tantalizing photography.

I hope some of my trees will have ripe fruit this time next year.

The Celestes look very nice too!

How is Atreano compared to a kadota? they look the same.

Elgin, atreano is a much larger fig than my kadota. Hard to compare the taste. They are in the 80+ grams.

Frank From The North, yes the tree is in ground. There are a couple of hundred figs on the tree and it is only two years old. So far the rain hasn't bothered them but they do have a limit. The right posterior Atreano fig atop the Celestes is the one that ripened to perfection giving it an intensely figgy concentrated flavor we all look for in a fig.

To: Frankie Tallahassee,

Thanks.  In ground, and, prolific too.  That's the 'Atreano' trait.  There were some years when I had to thin out the figs.

Enjoy the fruits of your efforts.

Nice!

Makes me look forward even more to someday with mine.

goss

I planted my Atreano in the ground a couple months ago.  Yours look outstanding!

Hello
FMD, are the figs on your pic brebas? when you say Atreano makes many figs, are they Brebas or main figs? they look very nice.
Thanks

Bonsoir Yves,

They are main crop figs.
For some reason, I get very few brebas of any variety at my Tallahassee location.

FMD, good breba production variants that withstand colder spring weather here are DK & Latarrula. Of course Gillette produces a reliable breba crop here but taste is not to my liking. I was just talking to a friend this afternoon & he said the Gillette at his house has over a thousand figs and they are very good for making soup.

Paul, I pulled my DK out of the ground this year precisely because of zero brebas once again. I think the Northwest is the place for brebas.

Atreano would occasionally produce brebas for me but they were very soft, near mush.  Either that or not near ripe.  This year it looks like main crop only on it.

Right on time for 2014. First ripe fig. Knocked down by a bird so it could have used another day or two on the tree.

The huge size always surprises me.

Nice size figs
Hope to get some cuttings when i am in the us. i wonder about its origin- is it italian?

The leaf on the Kadota compared to Atreano are extremely different.

Atreano needs to ripen thoroughly to develop the best flavor. It is a large fig and very productive. Atreano was brought back by the late Hanc Mathies from the Naples, Italy. He named this fig "Atreano".

That looks more crunchy than jammy.

These figs when perfectly ripened are the tops!  Figs can get huge.  Many times I could only fit two figs on my opened hand.  Like yellow, tennis balls.

A good workhorse fig variety, and consistent.

FMD...good job!

looks great Frank.

I can't be leave they get that big. Is one a meal?

Well at least you have those birds trained to pick them for you.

Hello Hershell-

I used to grow 'Atreano', until my tree was killed by the cold Winter of '13-'14.  Yes, the figs can be that huge.  I was always astonished by the size of some of the figs that this variety can push out.
