Atreano Main Crop

Here are three Atreano main crop figs. The rest are coming on fast. You will notice the one to the right rear has a little latex showing(I knocked it off probably a day or two early) Included a whiffle ball(didn't have a tennis ball, but ~ the same size) and quarter for scale. I ate the cut one and was sweeter than the one breba I posted earlier, but still watered down. Lacks that figgy taste, but will probably make great jam. It's been raining almost every day for the last week, so I'm hoping for some dryer days ahead so I can get a true feel for how it actually tastes. The pulp is mostly white with a slight tinge of strawberry. Did the same late last season and got more pink as the season progressed. The skin is thick at the top but tender, thin over the rest of the fig. That is my wife's hand holding the fig. If you have this variety, please feel free to share your experiences with it.

Very nice Tim, that fig has some size to it. Hopefully the weather dries up some so you can get a better taste of it. But what I saw of the weather this morning doesn't look encouraging. A low pressure area has developed in the Gulf just south of the La. coast with a probably forecast to move toward you. Hopefully not, let it move toward Florida up the front which will stop it from becoming tropical.
"gene"

Yes, the forecast doesn't look too good for us rain-wise. Just have to grin & bear it.

I only had a few Atreano in the past but I can say, they were very tasty, for a large white fig.
Let it ripe totally because it will not spoil like some other cultivars.
Then you will find out they are tasting very good.

my atreano has gotten itself well established in it's first year in the ground.  has 4 or 5 figs on it so far, hoping for more.. will post pics when i get up the gumption to take pics and load them up.    i was figuring on the 2nd year to evaluate.

nice looking fig, lots of rain here also the past 4 days

Very nice looking fig Tim. No rain here but its been hotter than hell last couple days was 110 yesterday with the humidity.

Thanks again everyone. I'll let it ripen further and see if the taste improves. I was scared the birds would get them, but so far, have left them alone. The tree is too big for a net. I guess the celestes are keeping them occupied.

Hi Tim I have not used this but seen a post on GW some say it works others say No, But it is cheap enough to give it a try

Here is the florida garden post scroll almost to end to see her set up She has some nice looking trees also. I enjoyed her pictures

Thank Sal, for the information, I think I'll give it a try---can't hurt. Here is another picture of the Atreano bounty---this tree is absolutely loaded. I took H2's great advice and let them ripen longer and they are a little sweeter, but not rich/figgy. We've had almost daily rains and they have not spiled or split at all. They just fall to the ground when they are ripe.I think the rains have just watered them down a bit. Had to blow off a couple ants, but not spoiled. Gonna make fig jam out of these.

my 1st year atreano.  only 1 fig so far, and it's green.

Mike, your tree looks nice. It'll grow (the fig) to about the size of a golfball , sit there for a while and then when it's ready KABOOM! Mine was still producing figs up until our first freeze in December last year. I'm curious to see how it responds this year. Good Luck

Sassy,

I have to agree that the Atreano is a little weak in the flavor department, here, as well. It was one of the first to ripen last year, but will be much later this year, though it looks like it is coming along. It may be one of those figs that responds well to the NJ/PA climate better than yours or mine, because it always seems to get good reviews on the east coast. We have been stuck in the low 70s and only 3-4 hours of sun each day. Not a lot of ripening going on.

i think a lot of my figs aren't suited to hot florida weather.  of course, the proof is in the quality and quantity of the fruit.

Thanks Jon, I have purposely left some to ripen until they fell off the tree and the flavor did improve(was a little more figgy), but you are right---it is a mild flavored fig. I made some fig jam with them yesterday, but the flavor was just sweet, so I added a little cinnamon & clove and it was much tastier. The color of the jam being light green, next batch,I think I'll add some chopped jalapeno and see how that is. It may be mild flavored, but that is one super productive tree----like nothing I've ever seen. Probably not so unusual for those living in paradise ;o)))

Mike, I know I have some that aren't particularly suited for my climate, but I like to experiment & I enjoy growing some unusual figs that nobody around here has for sure. Makes it more interesting!

Definitely productive.

I had 2 breba so far this year,a handfull of main crop figs, last year, and a couple of main crop 2 years ago,and all were full of Flavor.
They looked more yellow white when ripe unlike Tim picture wich the color is green.
And I am sure it is the same cultivar because the leaves are identical to Tim fig,so it must be the climate.

This year the Breba were such a consistency, that I can fill the sugar crunching in my mouse.
So far is the earliest 2 crop white fig, here in NJ.

Hi Herman.  I'm going to have to add an Atreano to my wish list.

The cuttings you sent are doing great, and many are now well over 2 feet tall and look very healthy.

Hope all is well with you.

Best wishes.

John:Definatelly,do it.
You will never regret this one.

Have anyone find any differences between Atreano(OR=Original) and Atreano (RR = Rolling Rivers Nursery) ?

Definitely not the same. The OR is THE real deal. I received mine from the fellow who was the origin of the one at Belleclare.  The RR is pretty much different in all respects: size, shape, leaves, growth, crop set, taste, etc.

.................. interesting.............thanks for the info Jon.

Thanks for all the info. guys. I'm going to locate a real Atreano so I can have a comparison. If some don't already know, mine is from Rolling River. It'll be interesting as John says they are different & Herman says they are the same. Last time this was dicussed , my leaves matched Jose's which is the original along with Hermans'.. Jose's had an amber pulp, Herman's was pink and mine was amber early on and more pink later on.  it'll be fun to see the difference. If anyone has an original rooting, I'll be glad to purchase it--- just send me an email.

Herman, after letting them get dead ripe(falling off the tree), they are yellow and not green.

I have an atreano from belleclares.  I dont know if that is what is being called "original".  Right now I have 1 huge breba.  Will take a picture of it tomorrow.  My atreanos center is red.  They are large figs, with tight eyes usually.  My only knock on atreano is that it is one of my blandest tasting figs.  I really dont know why I keep it around.  But as we all know taste is quite subjective.

Thanks Ed, I'd like to see a picture if you get a chance. I think the Belleclaire one is the original. Tim
