Atreano pics

Good day, here is another picture of my Atreano figs picked this morining.  Very large fig!  I got the tree from One Green World 2 years ago and it has produced some amazing sweet figs this year.  The figs are very large, sweet and refreshing.  The taste reminds me of a very sweet watermelon.  I got this tree planted in a hug container but will be planting it in the ground come spring.  Unprotected last year and it did very well in my area, 7b.  cheers.

Nice Dennis!

JD

Hi Dennis, glad to hear it was good for you. May be a different strain than my Atreano from Rolling River. It looks similar, but the taste of mine is very mild. One forum member seems to think it is because of our hot weather here in Texas. Enjoy!

Wait till it is inground and 5 yrs old,it will be much improved,in special flavor.
On mine it was m ore complex,i usually do not consider water mellon a nice flavor, yet I loved mine this year.
It has the reminder of the crop ,a few left getting ripe one at the time, and they are better than the bulk of the crop.

Herman,
A question about your comment "Wait till it is in ground and 5 yrs old,it will be much improved,in special flavor."
Will the statement still be true if the plant dies to the ground and in spring shoots from the ground with new wood?

Tim, VS has a very good point!  The figs on my tree are very sweet and semi-soft.  So, I'm going to plant mine in the ground this Winter.

Hey VS when do you plant your trees in the ground in your area?  I'm trying to decided if I should plant mine in December or February.  What do you recommend?

Well Otawan:Isn't it strange that I have to answer yes and no.
Here is Why:
For you in Otawa Canada,if it dies to ground ,the fruits will ripe in October, when to cold and so fruits are not full Flavor,so for you No.
For Dennis,in much warmer climate, but with cold winter sometimes,if killed, the tree grows back and get ripe in September ,and the days are hot,so it still makes better fruits than the year before because the plant has stronger roots!.
So for Dennis the result is yes,his tree improves year after year even if it starts from soil level again.
So I would say you take care of your plant not to die to soil level, just peg the branches down and cover them with about 6 inches of soil, and you will be ok.
People Back in Transilvanya cover the whole Vineyard, hundreds of vine every year with soil, and have some of the best wine in the Estern Europe, champaine and spumante too.
Think about covering 600 grape vines manually with the How,and then uncover them in the Spring, every year.
Planting tree in a warm zone, like yours?
Best in Spring, after danger of frost in your area, let say,1st of April,or earlier.
You can also plant immediatelly after the first light frost, when leaves are fallen out,at least 3/4.of them on ground.
Your tree will survive both way but Spring is sure shot .
Do not take more tree out of pot than you can plant in 1 hour.
Dig holes first. Pour one bucket water in every hole before planting.

Herman
Now that fruit in Transilvanya will really be called "Fruit of Labour" !!

I always think that covering the plant stems/trunks with soil helps more than the covering the same parts with just leaves (everything else being the same) because the covering soil connects with the ground for better conduction of geothermal heat than with leaves. Do you agree that it is the reason why soil provides better ptotection?

Ok, VS, thank you.  I understand now and it all makes sense.  Last year, I left my LSU Purple, LSU Gold and Arteano outside in containers unprotected.  When the temperature got below 20 degrees, I tried to wrap and protect the tips but it did not work.  These 3 trees are my largest I have in containter and they need to be planted in the ground.  So, come mid February, in the ground they go.

Otawan :I agree clean soil is best.
You will also find out in the Spring that your tree are well ahead, with green buds and embryos too.
I would like you to do it at least to one tree and report the results.
It will be very encouraging for people in cold climates not to be afread to plant inground.
The tree must be formed ahead to have an very open center if posssible multiple young trunks going all directions, but I am sure it can be done with any fig tree.
This is done in stages, over the years,so if it doesn't have the right shape now do not worry, just cover it best you can,and in the following years you form it.
