Atreano ,ripe figs,pix

This cultivar has everything right for the east coast and other non ideal climates for figs.
It has excellent taste, flavor, extralarge size, good adaptability to rain, while ripening, and is early too, here in New Jersey.
Here is a pix of the fifth, and sixth ripe figs I was harvesting today.
Size:110 grams each.
We had for last 3 days, rain everyday, and they never split,or lost Flavor.
I think George M,(Thanks, again George)traded cuttings with me for this one 4 yrs ago.
It was in my fig cellar over winter, and planted it inground in April, where I intend to let it be.
Dr Leon, told me to leave them on till ripe completelly for best flavor.
I did and ,yes they do taste excellent, despite looking a little ugly.when left longer on vine.
Here is the pix:

Big indeed makes that quarter look very small, glad you enjoyed it and not the birds or squirels.

Thanks for sharing Herman. Sometimes the uglier the skin on the fig the sweeter it is. I'm looking forward to my Atreano to bear.

It was a real early bearer here is San Diego, and had a very heavy crop. Is quite sweet, but the flavor just doesn't grab me. Not ready to shovel prune it, but it definitely needs to improve in the flavor category. I know that makes me the odd-man-out, but it was not a winner this season.

I guess I should add that the Atreano from Rolling River looks different - it is larger, less round and still not ripe - so about 6 weeks or more behind my other Atreano.

Jon:I am not saying that this Atreano,is as Flavorfull as:Black Ischia,Col de Dame,or Barnisotte Black,Because it is less flavorfull than those, but the above mentioned, are almost Impossible to grow, here on East Coast.
In Fact I know nobody outside me,and Gene In Wash. Dc,that ,could fruit those, here.
And I also want to mention, that we only got fruits, once every 3 yrs or so,and only a few fruits.
Atreano,I can see is a real producer, and much easyer to grow by everyone,so that is why I am Happy about it.
I know in your climate you can make fruit ,more exotic cultivars with much better Flavor,so I can see how Atreano, can be just another ordinary fig for you.
Yet The same cultivars here will be a total, dissapointment.
Best Regards

Herman, I wasn't arguing, only noting that it has many good attributes, but flavor, so far, wasn't one of them, for me.

Thanks Jon
I know you did not argue,I just wanted to point out that you are in much better position,to be choose, than us here on east coast.
Your climate is almost Ideal for growing any rare fig cultivar.
Best Regards

Hi Vasile, I was wondering the fig lineage of this Atreano.I recieved an airlayer of the original Atreano from a friend on this forum but it did not survive so I purchased one from Rolling River.Jon mentioned that yours and the one from Rolling River are not the same.Living on the East Coast like you and George I need similiar varieties that will grow under our conditions.Vasile if you are not sure of the origin George can you please chime in! Thanks so much.

The early one that I have is "original". This was a little unripe, and I have taken subsequent pix, but don't have the ready yet.

The one from Rolling River is different. See http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Atreano.html It is marked 0-12RR, but should actually be marked 0-16RR (will get it corrected).

The third one I have (the real 0-12) has turned out to be a Celeste.

Hi Jon:Thanks again:Looking at the last picture, this one last one,of yours,I can say for sure the one I got from GM,is this early one.
Like I said very good for our condition.
The one from Rolling River,is not the one I have, because it is too much red inside, and also has too much blue around the eye.
Hi Antonio:I have a little Atreano, for you,and I am trying hard to make an unknown #5,but that one is almost impossible to propagate.
If you could drive by my house I will give it to you.

My Atreano is from RR and it is more round in shape.  It produces large figs and I am picking them daily!  Last year, we have early 90 degree weather and a bit more rain.  Mine was in a pot and did very well.  Today, she's in the ground and loves the extra room.  My breba crop was red inside but not sweet.....vey bland.  This year's main crop is large, soft and not that sweet.  My tree is full of figs.  I wish the figs on my tree were more sweet.

I had an 'Atreano' from Paradise Nursery (in Viriginia, if I remember correctly).  I was growing in a container in Houston, TX.  In it's third year, I found the figs to have undertones of cucumbers and otherwise pretty good (but not great) flavor.

I have an Atreano which I just started this year. It was very fast to grow from a cutting. I was told by the person I got it from that it was sourced from Belleclaire. Hoping it is a good one for taste!! Does anyone know if Belleclaire's Atreano is one of these versions discussed above?

Thanks Alan. I guess I will wait and see about the taste, I do believe Jon is more picky about that since he has sooo many to choose from. I would be too!! At least I know it is a productive tree.  And if it is also the same as Herman's I am in luck becasue he likes it very much. I am not too far fromHerman either in zone 6.

I have the Atreano from Herman. It dropped its Breba. i am looking forward to the main crop. They are already large so I expect them to be a good size when ripe. But it is young so the taste I expect to be okay.

NYPD:The main crop is not only OK,it is super super tasty .
I had small young fig with only one main crop atreano and it was delicious.
Just make sure you do not have a lot of fruits on a very small tree, because then it is not tasty.

I was refering more to the age and taste. I figured it wouldn't gain it's full potential for at least another 2 years.

Yes you are right ,it will improve when old,but Mine was super tasty from the begining with the main crop, unlike others.
Just do not rush to take it out unripe.
Maybe a net is in order for this one.
This year it had a lots of huge Breba  tasty too,but I did not take any pixes anymore.

Glad to know you are endorsing this fig for the east coast and so whole heartedly. I am looking forward to mine starting production. Thanks for posting thsi information Herman.

Barry

Yes I am endorsing this one totally.
Thanks to a New York, Gardener this one was brought back from Italy,I have forgotten his name.
Edith:I think I remember:The gardener that imported Atreano was  "Hank Mathis"

Where does the Atreano from Hanc Matheis fit into this?  Is that the "original" one that Belleclare had?

Fignut:There is only one true Atreano, and the real one is good tasting from when young.
Of course there are other Atreano that are never tasty.
The one I have is tasty and is it.
I do not need to have paperwork to show that is coming from Belleclare.
and I do not have any paper on it,but I am sure,it is the real original Atreano.
Here is more pixes from 2010 season, showing the interior color!

Alan, in our area, the tree does very well.  In the past 2 years, my tree has been in a pot and the fruit was excellent.  This year it is in the ground and the figs are good, but not as sweet as last year.  My tree has douubled in size and I am picking figs daily.  I think over time the figs will improve.  I also planted my Golden Atreano in the ground too.  The figs from my GA taste the same as last year.  It too has douobled in size since placed in the ground.  I have 2 other Atreano figs growing in large pots and their figs are good too.

Noss:The fact is I only had one fully ripe Atreano left at that moment.
If ripe they do not last on the tree.
Someone will take it out.
Soooo, sorry if there were more I would have let you have more.
