Atreano Taste!,Vivian Question.

Vivian, said she liked the taste of Atreano, when she tasted from my tree.
She ask me :how it taste, because she could not figure out.
Well I am the same like you Vivian:I can;t explain how it taste, but I also like it very much.
One thing I like about it:The skin is edible sweet and flavorfull.
Another thing I like about it:Fruits remain tasty till Frost.
So yes it is a good white to have, may be a must for us here in the North east.
Here many white cultivars are useless because they will not ripe properly ,for lack of suficient heat.
So far I love  whites of:
Atreano,Bataglia Green,Adriatic JH.
Of course I have other very good whites but I prefer this three,at this point.

Hi Herman.  The Atreano we got from you made good progress and solid growth this year, and hopefully it will fruit next summer.  We can't wait!  ;-)

Hope you are well my friend.

Best wishes and happy holidays to all.

Hi Herman and John,

The Atreano was sweet, but not too sweet and had a real figgy taste to it and all that exploded around inside my whole mouth when I tasted it.  To me it was perfect.  I wanted MORE of those figs!  It sort of crossed my eyes and rolled them back up into my head, it tasted so good.

I'm paying close attention to Dan's information on the Atreano for down here and I'll be interested as to how yours does for you in the Piedmont, John.

There's some kind of chemical in those figs--I'm tellin' you--There really IS!  :)

Happy figging,

noss

.....its very contagious Noss. The day me & wife got the taste of a ripe italian fig, we were on the hunt to grow them in our conditions here and now we have over 100 trees, mainly in pots. In pots, we don't get many figs plus the limited time for ripening. But we love them and many locals are surprise that we can even grow figs here. Some new friends even say "Ah, so you are the folks with many fig trees" in that locality.

Herman, which one has the strongest strawberry flavor, Bataglia Green or Adriatic JR?

Also, which one of those two is as sweet as Atreano

Thanks for the info

Bob

I am not going to say wich one is better out of the three I mentioned, because everyone is better than the other in certain ways,Bob.
Here is my observations to this point:

Atreano:Positivelly ,a comercial cultivar (hybrid),Positivelly, an Italian modern selection ,that has everything a US market fruit should have + superior Flavor and taste.
Very good cold Tolerance,it managed to keep breba on,going trough the Winter in ground with medium protection last winter. It has the largest fruits of the 3 cultivars i mentioned, above.
Bataglia Green: A Late ripening fig,but when it ripe it does it in a short period, all at once, and it did ripe every fruit past Sommer. Flavor and taste:Excellent
Adriatic JH:First year rooted cutting ,planted inground ,produced 7 fruits,as tasty and as flavorfull as Bataglia and Atreano, that are both 5 years old!!!.
Can I judge it or compare it with the 2 older:No
Does it has a bright future:Providing it resist winter in the Future,YES.

Herman ,
Is  your Lindhurst white nearly as good as these three or not even close ?
How does it compare in yield and earliness ?
Thanks ,
Kerry

Lindhurst is nearly as good but a notch less tasty.
However it is more cold hardy than all of them,so far.

Yeld about the same as Atreano, superproductive.

Hi Herman.  I would add that the Lindhurst seems VERY easy to root.

Individual's success rate will vary of course, but I had 100% success in rooting the Lindhurst White, and we can't wait to try the fruit.

Happy holidays my friend.

Herman, Thanks for the quick response. I want to try one of those two figs, Adriatic JR or Bataglia Green. Mainly because the descriptions that are given, indicate that those three cultivars have a strong strawberry flavor. So, what I was asking was not which one you thought was the better tasting. But, which one based on your tasting experiences had the strongest strawberry flavor. I would only have room for one of them. So, I was trying to select the right one.

Thanks for your input.

Bob

I am trialing quite a few Adriatic type figs, including the ones that were listed. IMO, the Adriatic JR (James Robin Strawberry) is not as good as the JH Adriatic.

FYI, there is another non Adriatic type cultivar that tastes more like a strawberry than an actual strawberry tastes strawberry. That fig cultivar is Bourjasotte Gris. It is a medium to large sized late season brown fig. My tree is not as productive as I would like it to be.

Dan

Dan, thanks a lot for the information on Bourjasotte Gris. That information is one more I will add to the fig flavor list I'm keeping. Plus, rating it in intensity of flavor helps also. If I were to want a fig that taste like strawberries, I would indeed want the one with the strongest strawberry flavor.

I think flavor information is one thing that is missing on many of the post on certain figs. Nor is it information that is easy to come across on  the Internet.  This type of information gives the beginners a better idea of what type of figs to start with.

Your description of LSU late having the flavor of Morgan David wine was really descriptive and helpful. It's the only reference of a fig tasting like wine that I have ever run across.

Bob:I am not in the position to say wich one is better, because I have to wait a few more years to observe the plants. How can I tell you wich one has a stronger flavor when the plants are not the same age.
If I want to Guess:Then I would say Adriatic JH might be the winner in the future.
Also Adriatic JH is,the second cultivar I was growing that was so generous to produce ripe fruits in October, when rooted in March. (That is beside Marseilles vs blk).
In Fact I will create a new post about this subjiect.

Good info Herman. Fully agree that you should start a new thread for JH Adriatic. I am placing a lot of hopes on JH Adriatic too inspite of the coons/possum stealing my ripe fig. This won't happen
again to my 2011 ripe JH figs. Other variants I hope to get some good quality figs in 2011 are from Preto, Branca, Morena, Smith and I-395.

BTW Herman, if you were to compare JH Adriatic to the many darker ones in your collection, what would be your current opinion ?

Like i Said Adriatic (JH strain),is young so I am sure in the future it will improve in taste, most likelly, like all other cultivars that were edible and good the first or second year.
They became much better when over 5 years old.
I can't think it any other way.
If I was to compare against a black fig, then,I estimate now, that, it will be as good as, Kathleen Black,Maltese Falcon,or Barnisotte(UCD),when 5 years old.

This is definitely good news H2. Kudos to JH for sharing this variant and trials done thru'out N.America to gauge its potential.

To all my FIG friends, All the hard work and time spent on trying to find excellent tasting figs has it's rewards. In this case the treasure is ADRIATIC JH.
                  Stay Well,
                               Anthony

Can anyone fill me in on the history of JH Adriatic ?
I have searched both forums and don't find much.
Thanks ,
Kerry
