Every fig from this little tree splits for some reason. We were still getting heavy rains when the first few started to ripen and I thought that was the cause. The ground is dry now and haven't had any rain in a couple of weeks and the figs are still splitting. Maybe it's from the high humidity down here. The skin is a little thick and the taste is pretty good but when they are split wide open they can not be left to ripen as long as they should. I'll give another year and if they split next summer I guess I will put something else in its place.

That's heartbreak, Ryan. I had a couple of VdBs blow up on me last year too. Ate them anyway, that's right I did!
Maybe you can dig it up and put it in a pot?
My VdB will always stay potted.

Maybe some folks who grow this variety can confirm your suspicion.

Say it's not so, I was counting on this variety to be strong in my area. It may be grown in a large pot and protected.

Ryan, I hate to hear that for you and for me. Mine should bare fruit next year

It may not be the case for a lot you. I've heard nothing but good things about this fig but I do not know of anyone growing this variety along the gulf coast like me. Just about every day we have almost 100%  humidity. Also this is this figs first season in ground, it may get better for me as it matures. I would hate to get rid of it if all it needs is time.

Ryan, hopefully next season will be abetter one for this variety. In the meantime, just enjoy it as is. It's still a good fig.

Hi, Ryan,

I don't want to rub it in ( well maybe just a little!), but I just picked two figs from a two year old potted tree (thank you, Leon).  The one on the right was given a "10" by my wife; the one on the left was given a "8" because it was not quite ripe.

Ryan, Sorry to hear that. Maybe next year will be a different story.

Vito, Holy smokes! That one on the right looks sooo good.

Ah Vito, you have given me hope. Say it has been outlandishly hot and rain everyday and you grew a 10.

Our Negronne first crop had much less flavor but a much larger size than the main crop. The mains were great last year This years first crop was not so great.

Thanks ya'll,  I hope they look like yours next year Vito.

Ryan,
I grow mine in a pot and I haven't had any split yet. It is very humid here. The British Navy used to give their officers hazardous duty pay if in Wash in August. We get 100 degree heat with 100% humidity,  but still the figgies they no crack. I hear alot about figs cracking and last year I had some split but I think because I have them there figgies of mine in pots with very well draining soil - (fafard #52) (I water every day) - I don't have much of a problem with cracking little bags of flowers. My tree is pretty loaded and is only 3 years old but the figs are darn good. Although I do prefer Vista to this one and VdB and Mission and . .

Thanks for the info Michael, in the pot it stays.

Aubique Petite is a very good fig up here in central NY state.  The weather is not as humid here as in some locales, and it's also not as hot.  But this fig does very well here, among my favorites.  Like mgg, I have it in a pot with soil that drains very well.  Never had one split yet.  And the taste is really excellent, especially if you let it get truly ripe.

Vito:
Nice pics.
Glad P.A worked out for you.

I will chime in with a ringing endorsement of Aubique Petite, this was practically my favorite from Barry's fig farm, last year. Surpassed only by his Black Ischia. Yum yum.

Well I might give it 2 years to improve instead of of 1, lol.

I may have had a few splits early on but I can't remember ever having a problem. Its been in a clay pot for years.

That's good to hear kk. Like I said, it may be just cause it's young and first full season  in ground. I don't know how well fig trees grown in pots would do down here. I know the old timers would laugh at me because the only fig trees in pots down here are starter plants. All I have are those thin plastic trade pots and after they grow a little they stop until I put them in ground, the biggest pots I've used is 3-5 gal trade pots and it seems they stop growing cause the roots get to hot. That's just my opinion and I may be wrong.
