Austin: where to buy 5 gallon?

After frustrating attempt at growing figs, where is the best place to buy 5 or 3 gallon, ready to ground figs trees around Austin  areas? Cannot be grafted. I think Fannick Nursery in San Antonio is grafted? Will travel to Houston or San Anotonio if needed.  1 gallons are too small for grounding.

Desired grounded (only need 2 out of the list):
RDB, VDB, JH Adriatic,  Ichica Verte, Marylane seedless, preto

Price?

Currently just asking because right now, it is too hot to be grounded.
Most likely buy in the winter time.

In over four years, I never saw these varieties locally not even in a one gallon. In the dark varieties, you might find a Texas Everbearing which is a great fig, a Texas Blue Giant and perhaps a Black Italian. You're looking between $40 and $69 depending on the nursery. In the yellow varieties, you might find a Golden fig or a Lemon fig if you're lucky.

Thanks SAS,

I guess I have to grow them.
I got 2 living small rdb and 2 jh: But my luck is low. And part of me just want to throw my hands up and fork out the money.

Unless you want to spend $100's you have to grow them. You could get over three feet of growth in just one season in pots. Just plant them in the large Walmart SIP and use the miracle grow potting organic soil. Put them in a sunny spot on your balcony. By the end of summer you will be surprised. Once they go in ground the rate of growth will slow down dramatically until the roots get established. This might take about three years with the type of soil we have.

Really 3ft? I will be impressed! I did put them in a sunny spot. But they are still young and the temp is approaching 100F this friday. They started roasting. So I brought them all inside.

The soil here is a little. weak. Was told that a 1 gal will not survive well. That is why a 3-5 gal seems more feasible to ground here.

I took a chance and planted my UCD Col de Dame and Black Madeira in ground from cuttings that were about two to three months old. I use drip irrigation on a timer hooked up to my faucet. They get sun all day, If your pot is in the shade and does not get overheated, then it's ok. Root overheating might cause some damage, and slow down growth.
If that's the case put the pots in partial sun the first year.

Hi austin,
For the price (and no easy better choice) buy 2 small and put them in the ground. Keep them watered and fertilized and they will sky rocket ! ( water every other day or every day, fertilize every month ).
I planted trees even as cuttings (no roots - just branches) and they grew well in the ground - the growth is highly strain dependent . If your dirt is a concern make a hole and fill it with loam ...
Just protect them trees from rodents, rabbits, koons ... kids (from madame too sometimes) and dogs :)
And remember fertilizer and water !
If you fear for too much sun, plant a companion plant to provide shade. Could be a cabbage, or a low bush like currants .

The biggest drawback is you'll be using more patience ... Since a smaller tree will fruit later ( 3 or 4 years instead of 1 or 2 ) .
The main advantage with small trees is that they come as small bushes, and it is likely that you could make 5 trees out of them during the 3 years of growth.
I have currently 6 pots of madeleine des deux saisons and will probably make 4 more ... but I'm still waiting for my first figlet from that purchase ( a small bush with 4 stems of 4'' for the biggest )... Patience patience patience ...
Patience, and compost pile of course... sometimes ...

If you buy a known strain, you'll have better chances of success ...

A 5 gallon tree here would be out of reach, for my pockets ...( 100 bucks minimum) .

I have some small fig tree and they are in a 1g. But I swear they needs so much babying it is frustrating. Too hot. too wet. I left them out in the sun and they all roasted. Roots dying at the bottom and the outer most roots (near the inside pot). That I had to bring them inside. I then water them and that show signs of relief. I gave them Superthrive with water and then it burns them. So I flush out the fertilizer with more water: (the water is filtered bottle water). Now I am just waiting for another sign of trouble (over-watering). I already silt the pots to increase air circulation. This is way too much work. I am hoping something will last until winter time when I ground them. I got a gift of 1 vds  5gal from a friend that is thriving really well. I know that a 5 gallon I can keep alive. But baby fig tree are well like babies: so much work.

sobelri,

your SE TX.
Interesting you have the same problem.
I have a bigger problem: I am moving and don't have any shady place in my current resident.
When I move, I may take your advice.
It is fustrating.

So it's not on your list but Kingwood Garden Center (Northeast Houston) has 3 gallon LSU Purple fig trees on sale for $12.50.  Didn't have my phone w/ me but they're healthy looking trees, multiple branches with fruit.

There were only two.  Happy to pick one up for you and hold it if your interested.

Rick
