Australian Dwarf Brown Fig

My small tree has ripened one which i picked this evening. As a rare fig, it only is sold by a few nurseries.  Daley's (NSW) and Bulleen Arts and Garden (Melbourne).

A description by one of the nurseries (Bulleen Arts and Garden) that sells it:

"Originally sourced from a home orchard in N.S.W., where it had grown to about 2 metres high and about the same in width. Nice flavoured brown skinned fruits and a genuine dwarf tree suited to smaller spaces and backyards."

and now for the fruit: Sweet fruit, jammy and refreshing. 8.5/10. Highly recommended

In my opinion it's a Dorée or Goutte d'or.

Looks like you got a winner.

Ok found one of the nurseries you listed that had it its sold out. ;-(( they have a pic of it which is the same as yours but yours looks way better. Hope to locate this one.

Have you tried Bulleen Arts and Garden? last time i went there they had hundreds stocked there and they were much larger than the ones i got at Daleys nursery. The interesting thing is that they had the Dwarf Brown tag and on the other side of the tag it said "Brown Turkey" so i would be careful about getting them from Bulleen. Daleys on the other hand are genuine and have that reputation for selling genuine rare trees but they are more costly.

When they are in stock they usually sell quick. They can sell 30 trees in as little as 4-5 days as its highly sought after, along with the LSU Gold

I don't think they like being called 'dwarfs'. I believe the correct terminology is 'little figs'.

Hi TorontoJoe

My tree is still a baby at the moment. Hopefully it will grow much faster with the potting mix i am cooking up for it :)

Looks fantastic FigColt. Great pics and thanks for the review. Which are your favourites figs of those you have? I only have a Black Genoa and White Adriatic at the moment, but I am looking to expand and am most curious about the rarer varieties available in Australia.

Hi BodhiTree

I have heard good things about the black genoa and i cant wait for mine to ripen. I have no personal favorite but my favorites in terms of

Being prolific: White Genoa hands down. Great taste and it had figs on nearly every leaf axil. Im hoping for a bumper harvest next year!

Taste: The Mystery fig (see my Mystery fig Update post). I think its a greenish yellow skinned honey type fig and it had the best taste of all. Very sweet. I will dig it up from its shade post and put it in full sun. I think it did not bear much due to lack of sunlight. Im eager to know what it will do when i put it in better soil and full sun. I will share cuttings when i prune it this coming winter (in 2 months time.).

The others are still very young but bearing :) I am waiting on my Yellow excel and black genoa.

Thanks for the details FigColt. All very informative. Very interesting about your mystery fig. You give a mighty fine description of it. I hope it flourishes in the sun for you. Is the best month for pruning figs and sharing cuttings August here in Australia?

Can you ship cuttings out of Australia to the USA ?

Hi BodhiTree
My fig trees tend to swell buds and wake up usually the 3rd week of august (im in Victoria) I would say in july when they are really dormant? Im quite new to this and only started growing figs last year, but i would say July for me :)

Hie Here Nyfigguy

Unfortunately due to Australia's very strict biosecurity rules i can't send plant material overseas as its incredibly painful and costly. I do wish it were easier!

Thanks for the info FigColt. Even though I am in Perth it's useful to have a rough idea of when to expect buds.

Thanks fig colt - a friend in my homestead group has a beautiful family fig that I'd love to have here but you aussies take bio security seriously lol - I guess it's a good thing but I still want it lol 😂

no worries. Some varieties wake up earlier than others. My black genoa was the first to break dormancy last year.

i know the feeling. Thats the reason why we have so few varieties here. I'd say most of the rare ones we have here were brought here by some people who moved here back in the day.
