AUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! Sumaki death

Super bummed.
After thinking about it for some time, I ponied up and splurged, and bought a couple Sumaki cuttings from Bass this winter.  A few weeks ago I got them in perlite and started them.  They both took off and were doing well, althought still at the fragile state, not ready to up-pot.

Fast forward to 2 1/2 weeks ago.  I had a business trip, and planned to be gone for a week and asked the wife to mist my cuttings twice while I was gone.  At the end of this trip I managed to get by to see my elderly parents (out of state from where I currently reside).  While there, my mother developed complications from a (now known to be botched) surgery and I spent the next week with my mother in the hospital, trying to help my sisters in getting her through this rough time.

Well, in dealing with all this, I neglected to ask my wife to continue the mistings (unbeknown to me, she had negelected to mist the previous week as well).  Long story short (yes, I know, too late for that) when I got home, they had gotten too dry and I lost them,,,,, I am sick,,,,,,

Greg,
I'm sorry to hear about your mother's health complications...
...as for your cuttings, I recall a thread that was started just a few months ago that related to reviving dried out cuttings.  If I recall, there were discussions of soaking in very hot water and then possibly burying them underground for some time.  I believe there were also discussions on variations on this theme and member experiences.  Try to search for that, or maybe someone who knows better can post the link to the thread here.

"Hot Water Rescue", though I don't know if that would work with cuttings that have already rooted.

I lost a Haitive Argentuile (a little tree about 6 inches tall) to the extreme heat. I was a little sad about it, Then I thought, hey, I can ask the fig collector to send me some cuttings.  So not all is lost, I lost some really good ones lately.  Now I am trying to buy trees.

Greg,

I am still feeling your pain.  In 2012, I bought Sumacki and Rmali for a Syrian fig friend of mine who I had traded trees with before.  Of course, the plan was for me to air-layer each for me when they were big enough.  Neither one came out of dormancy in 2013.  I waited and waited, but nothing.  Both will probably make an appearance on my wish list this fall.

I would have packed those suckers in a box put them in my carry-on and taken them with me. :-)

Being a gardener makes it hard to take time away. I actually agonize leaving things unattended or in the hands of someone else. Sorry for the loss of you Sumaki. Hope your Mom is getting better.

Thanks all,
on a positive note. Mom is doing much better.  Another week of IV antibiotics and hopefully she will be back home.

Glad to hear your Mom is doing better, Greg.  We have a 3 day trip next month and I'm seriously thinking about taking a few of my pots so I can ensure they're watered properly.  I see lots of figlets on some special trees and I'd hate to lose them at this point.

You have to have a REAL gardener who cares to leave any precious plants in the custody of.  Anyone else will likely screw it up.

Glad to hear you Mother is improving.

Sorry to hear that. I had left my sumacki unprotected last winter it was a nice size tree. It died back like all the figs in our area, but it sprouted back and it's about 3 ft tall already. Remind me in a month or so to see if I can get you any.

Thanks Bass!!

Thanks all for the comments
